I curse under my breath. “When?”

“Just about fifteen minutes ago. I wanted to give you a heads up.”

“I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

I sigh, looking down at Mia for a long moment, longing to get into bed with her and sleep. I’m tired from the trip and from working all day, but I guess it isn’t meant to be.

I call Nico and he picks up right away, always ready.

“Capo?”

“There’s something going down at our dry-cleaning business,” I say quickly. “I need you there. I’ll meet you.”

“Be there with bells on,” Nico answers.

I’m grateful for Nico, he’s more like a brother to me than just an employee, and I feel a bit better that I’ll have backup as I head downtown.

I park illegally and jump out, cursing when I see that all the glass has been shattered.

Nico’s already there with his gun out, checking the perimeter.

“They’ve cleaned out,” he says after a few moments.

“Fuck,” I curse again, and then I walk inside, stepping over broken glass and turning off the blaring alarm. “Call Richie,” I tell Nico, speaking of the cop that has helped me and my father for the past decade.

Everyone’s got a few cops in their pocket. Richie’s been a friend to the Riccis for years. His mother and my father had a thing back in high school, and Richie and his family have been loyal to us.

Nico does as I say as I survey the damage.

On the back wall, there’s an upturned hourglass spray-painted on the sheet rock.

Great.

The upturned hourglass is the symbol of the Lorenzo famiglia, and I’m not surprised that Luca tried to destroy my business. He wants to take over my territory, and I’m not going to let that happen.

I seethe, wanting to call Luca right away and ask him what the hell he’s doing. We’re supposed to be on good terms after I married his daughter, but I guess we’re not.

“Gallo’s here,” Nico warns me, and I turn around and Vincenzo is stepping through the glass at the front of the store.

“Fucking Lorenzo,” Vincenzo says.

I’ve never quite liked Vincenzo. He’s kind of a creep with women and once he came on to Felicia while we were together and it pissed me off, but overall, he’s been helpful.

He’s a little guy, standing about five-foot-seven, and although he’s only a couple of years older than me, his hairline is receding.

I look down at him. “Why would he do this? I just married his daughter, for God’s sake.”

It doesn’t really make sense.

Vincenzo shrugs. “Maybe his guys didn’t get the memo.”

I hum. That could be it, but I don’t think so.

I already have plenty of reason to hate Luca Lorenzo, but now I’m even more irritated. This isn’t on the same par as killing my father, but it’s a pain in my ass.

“Maybe you should call him,” Nico suggests.

“Call him for me tomorrow,” I command. “Set up a meeting.”
