It’s time for us to have a talk anyway.

Nico helps me start to clean up while Vincenzo stands there like a log until I throw a broom at him.

Richie the cop shows up and he whistles at all the damage.

“What the hell happened here?”

“Luca Lorenzo,” Vincenzo pipes in, and I give him a hard look. He shrugs and goes back to sweeping up glass in a half-assed way.

Vincenzo seems to love sticking his nose in my business, but I guess since he alerted me to the situation, I can’t be an asshole to him like I want to be.

I want to be an asshole to nearly everyone right now. I had plans to go home and make love to Mia and instead I’m here cleaning up like a goddamn janitor.

I throw the broom down, thinking I have men who will do this for me.

“Call in a few guys,” I tell Nico. “I’m not doing all this work.”

“Anything you say, capo,”he says, walking back out into the street.

Richie takes a few notes. “I’ll keep some guys patrolling around, but there’s no real evidence.”

I pointed at the upturned hourglass. “Isn’t that evidence?”

Richie shakes his head. “Everyone in the city knows that’s Lorenzo’s mark. Anyone could have done it.”

Richie has a good point. It could be anyone that wants me to think that it’s Lorenzo, but why? I don’t have beef with any other of the famiglias in this area.

Unless they have beef with me and I just don’t know it.

I run a hand through my hair, frustrated.

“I saw Ricardo’s Mercedes,” Vincenzo pops up. Ricardo Rossi is Luca’s right-hand man.

Richie nods and takes down a note. He’s mostly useless unless one of the famiglia gets arrested, but for show I have to have a report put down.

And for the insurance.

“You should just torch the place,” Vincenzo says, throwing down his broom.

“Keep your opinions to yourself,” I snap, and Vincenzo holds up his hands.

“Just a thought, capo,” he says, but I don’t like the way he says it. It sounds almost condescending.

“Why are you so interested in my property, anyway, Vince?” I ask, taking a few menacing steps toward him.

Vincenzo backs up, keeping his hands up. “I don’t!” he insists, his voice going high-pitched and frightened.

I scoff. Vincenzo is a coward, always getting his men to do the dirty work. I keep trying to like him because he’s helped me now and again, but it’s hard to change my opinion.

“I’ll get out of your hair,” he says, and exits the building.

Nico comes back around, making a wide berth around Vincenzo. He has the same opinion of him as I do.

“This feels off, boss,” Nico says, and I nod.

“It’s fucking weird, that’s for sure,” I say. “Right after my honeymoon? Which Luca paid for? It doesn’t make sense.”

“Vincenzo ringing the bell makes me suspicious. I’m going to get a couple guys to follow him,” Nico says, and I nod, relieved.
