I smile at him. “How long have you known Dante?” I ask.

“Shit, since we were kids. His father was like a father to me too,” he tells me.

I cock my head, interested. “And you started working for him…” I trail off, hoping he’ll continue.

“As soon as I became his best friend, and I became aware of the family business, I always protected him,” he says flatly.

“Where was your father?” I ask.

“Died when I was twelve,” he answers.

“Jesus, I’m sorry,” I tell him softly and Nico shrugs.

“Nothing to be sorry for. That’s life, right?”

I frown, thinking that in their line of work, Nico and Dante are risking their lives every day.

“What’s the deal with Felicia?” I ask suddenly, since Nico is being open with me.

Nico looks away from me. “Felicia who?”

I scoff. “The bimbo that just came in here fawning over my husband. Tell me, Nico. Were they together?”

Nico groans. “You’re lucky I don’t like to lie to pretty women.”

I smile tightly, showing my teeth. I’ve picked it up from Dante.

“They had…a thing.”

“What do you mean, a thing?”

Nico shrugs. “A thing. Off and on, nothing serious.”

“She seems serious about it,” I mutter.

“She was a lot more serious than the boss, that’s for sure,” Nico admits.

“And now?”

Nico gives me an even look. “Now, there’s no thing. The boss is married to you. End of story.”

I can tell that he’s not going to say anything further, and so I push back from the table and deal us another hand.

I start feeling worse and worse as we play and eat pizza, and eventually I excuse myself to go to lie down.

Nico props himself up on the couch downstairs.

I lie face down on the bed but the momentum of bouncing makes me dizzy and I get up and lurch to the bathroom, throwing up in the sink.

“Ugh,” I mutter, washing it down with water from the faucet.

I need a friend, so I call Marta.

“Mia,” she answers. “How are you, girl?”

“Like a bus ran over me,” I admit.

“Why?” she asks. “Are you worse from your rib pain? Maybe you should ask for an x-ray.”
