“It’s not my ribs. I think it’s something I ate. Or maybe from just the stress of everything that happened,” I explain. “I’ve been sick twice already today…”

Marta pauses so long I think she might have hung up on me.

“Marta?”

“Mia, are you sure that’s all it is? When’s the last time you had your period?”

I blink, thinking back. “I don’t know. Who keeps up with that sort of thing?”

“People who don’t want to get pregnant,” she says wryly.

I blanch. “I’m not pregnant. I can’t be. Dante and I have only been married…”

We’ve been married a month, but we first had sex two weeks before that. And thinking back, I don’t think I’ve started my period since I’ve been with Dante.

“Shit,” I curse.

“You need to get a test,” Marta says firmly.

“Come bring me one,” I plead.

“No way, sister,” she says quickly. “Papa has me sheltering in place after what happened to you.”

“Then how am I supposed to get a test?” I hiss.

“I don’t know! Be creative. And call me back.”

I look on Postmates and sure enough, there’s no pregnancy tests available at the local Walgreens.

I sigh and walk downstairs.

“Nico, I need you to take me to the store.”

“Boss doesn’t want you leaving the house if we can help it, “ he says firmly. “I’ll get you what you need and have Alberto keep an eye on the house.”

Alberto is one of Dante’s drivers.

I swallow hard. “But, Nico, it’s lady’s stuff,” I argue.

Nico's ears go red. “I don’t mind,” he mutters.

Damnit.

“Fine,” I mumble. “I need you to get me a Gatorade and a pregnancy test.”

Nico blinks once, twice, then he just looks at me.

“What kind of Gatorade and what brand of test?”

I groan. “Lemon lime and I don’t know, the most expensive one.” I pause. “And don’t go reporting back to Dante. This might be just me stressing out over nothing.”

I’m not pregnant,I keep telling myself. It’s just stress. Marta’s just making me paranoid.

“Got it,” he says, and pulls out his phone, presumably to text Alberto.

Alberto arrives in just fifteen minutes and I’m downstairs staring into space when Nico calls that he’s leaving.

“Thank you,” I say blankly and Nico gives me a little salute.
