His brother nods. “Yeah, we just acquired a great asset for a pittance.”

Carl glares at us. “That’s not what I meant.”

“Oh, really? Is there anything else we should be celebrating? Our best friend just closed a deal that will earn the company eighty million dollars by this time next year. This should be your top priority right now. What kind of CFO are you?”

"Exactly, Carl. This was your project, after all. You should be dancing on the table. The old cronies of the Board will be jumping for joy!" I state with a smile, slapping his back.

“Yes, and you never know, one of them could actually get so happy for the boost to his share that he might get a stroke and leave a free place in the board for one of us,” Tony deadpans, a mock-evil glint in his blue eyes, his fingers entwined in front of him in a small pyramid. He looks every inch the part of the greedy, bloodthirsty lawyer.

I laugh, shaking my head while Carl's frown deepens. "You are hilarious, guys, really…" he grumbles.

“Oh, come on! It’s not like we forgot, man,” Tony elbows him with a shit-eating grin on his face.

“Yeah, we remember only too well that you are getting hitched, you gooey-eyed fool,” I sigh, feigning disapproval. It's an ongoing joke between the three of us.

“Hold your horses, Dev! I’m pretty sure I could still convince the lovely Jane that she picked the wrong brother. Look at him. He is such a big bear, always sour and brooding!”

“Maybe she likes big grumpy bears, Tony. What do you know?”

"Well, then, you should be the one wooing her away from the worst mistake of her life. You are at least five inches taller than Carlie and definitely grumpier on any given day."

We both laugh, and Carl looks away like an offended five-year-old, his arms crossed in front of him, but there's a little smirk on his lips. "Just stop it, both of you. And don't even dream of being late tonight, or Janie and Lynn will have your head."

Lynn…

Just hearing her name reinforces my barely-calmed arousal, and once again, my dick pushes painfully against the fly of my tailored dark slacks. I need to get away from here. I need to be alone.

“And let’s not forget little Sookie,” Tony whispers, looking over his shoulder, eyes wide open in mock alarm.

I raise both hands in front of me at the mention of my beloved baby sister. If I mess with her carefully planned arrangement for tonight’s engagement party, she will do far worse than have my head. “Don’t even speak her name, bro. You joke about it, but she might really have spies on us. I wouldn't put it past her. She'll do anything to make the night perfect for her friend."

The two brothers share a laugh, but we all know I’m only half-kidding.

We leave the conference room and go our separate ways.

Tony, still chuckling, Carl with a silly love-struck expression on his face, his ear glued to his cell.

I dart through the hall, avoiding one collision after another with all the people that need a minute to speak with me.

No way in hell I can have a business conversation in this state. I don’t have time for it.

“Not now!” I bark at them without even stopping my stride toward the safety of the elevator.

Five minutes later, I'm relaxing in the back of my limo, a half glass of whiskey in one hand, my mind replaying each and every expression on Lynn's beautiful face, each and every gesture of her tiny fingers and each and every word that escaped her lips during our confrontation.

“Fucker,” I murmur.

She called me a fucker to my face. No one has ever had the gall to do something like that—and with good reason. I would destroy the poor bastard who dared to do it.

With her, it’s different. It doesn’t piss me off when she insults me. It turns me on.

Maybe I'm going crazy. There's no other explanation because it seems like everything that comes from her lips is a jolt to my system, one that I have grown to crave.

I grin to myself. She can call me whatever she wants.

I down the chilled content of my glass, making the cold liquor stones in it jingle and my throat burn.

If only I could make her see.
