He shakes his head and then brushes a too-short kiss onto my forehead, his lips cold. "We'll talk tonight,” he announces, turning on his heels, and then he is gone before I can protest further.

I feel tears pooling in my eyes and blink them away, willing my heart to calm down. What the fuck did just happen?

* * *

"And he was socold and… I don't know... detached, I guess. So distant… he could not leave my sight fast enough,” I sniffle into my phone. “I don’t understand what could have happened.”

"Lynn, I'm sure it's nothing. We'll figure it out, okay? You know my brother loves you very much. Tell us exactly what happened," Sookie asks me.

I can tell from the tone of her voice she is pretty freaked out by the whole thing and probably expected this even less than me, but she is trying to sound calm.

I dry my tears with the back of my hand. "Well, you know my feelings for him have changed a lot in the last few weeks, and I wanted to tell him today."

I let the silence stretch between us, unwilling to relive the morning's events.

“And?” Jane probes after a while.

"And nothing, guys. I told him we needed to talk, that I needed to tell him something important, and all of a sudden, his entire face… I don't know… it went like... expressionless and... and dark. I tried to make him talk to me, but I did not have much luck. He was out of the door less than five minutes later."

“And he said nothing at all?”

I sigh miserably, trying to puzzle the whole thing together. I’m having a hard time understanding what could have turned my loving, attentive boyfriend into someone who could not leave my presence faster. “Nothing of consequence, Sook. Just that he had forgotten about some meeting, but it doesn’t make sense. First of all, Dev doesn’t forget about that kind of thing. Ever. You know that.”

She sighs. “Yes… that is true, but you know that there’s a first time for everything.”

I shake my head. “Even if that was the case, he is the CEO. He can very well afford to be a quarter of an hour late to a fucking meeting!”

I hear Jane huff. “It doesn’t sound at all like him, Lynn. You’re right. But still, it must be a misunderstanding.”

I feel my heart squeeze. “I hope so.”

“Have you tried to call him?”

A mirthless laugh escapes my lips. "It's all I have been doing for the last eight hours, Sookie. He is not picking up his damn phone, and his secretary told me he has been locked in his office for most of the day, not to be disturbed."

"I know… I'm sorry. I also tried to call him, but they said the same thing to me."

“See? Too busy to even talk with his baby sister? Something is wrong. God! I’m so worried. I need to see him, talk to him…”

“Wait a minute,” Jane’s voice brings me back to myself.

“What?” I turn off the speaker and put my cell back to my ear.

“What you just said: that you need to talk to him. I mean, the wording… that’s what you said to him this morning, too. Right?”

I cover my eyes with one hand. “I don’t see your point.”

“I think I do,” whispers Sookie. “And you could be right, J.”

"Of course, I'm right. We all know him. He is not the type of guy that would make his girlfriend, his family, and all his friends worry like this for nothing. He must be very upset. You told him you needed to talk. Think how it must have sounded to him."

"Exactly. You don't have to jump to conclusions. Just talk to my brother as soon as you can."

I sit up, staring in front of myself, replaying what happened this morning in bed. The way he was smiling at me, the way he was calling meloveand being all cute, and then the way his handsome face just suddenly fell when—

"Oh, God, I'm a jerk! You are both absolutely right. Thank you, guys!"

Ten minutes later,I'm closing the door of a cab; my hands clasped nervously on my jean-clad lap.
