I was out in front of the shop, about to go inside to get my bike when Greer’s Lexus GX 460 pulled up. It was a hot SUV. The color was this gorgeous blue, not too dark but not light either. I actually looked it up because I needed to know what they referred to it as. It was called Nightfall Mica. I wasn’t usually one for fancy vehicles. I preferred older ones I could get my hands dirty working on. There was no denying the appeal of the Lexus, especially when Greer stepped out like I hadn’t seen him before.

Dark denim molded to his thighs and hips. Black boots adorned his feet. A long-sleeved, baby-blue shirt was tight to his chest and arms, falling just past the waist of his jeans. I could see the outlines of his nipple piercings through the shirt. I’d seen them before. Thought about putting my lips on them. Sunglasses covered his eyes and fuck me, I wanted to bend him over the Lexus and have my way with him. I had to control myself. Greer needed more than sex. We had a connection; one I didn’t want to lose.

He tipped his sunglasses low on his nose. “See something you like?” He stepped toward me, and I met him in the middle. His eyes dropped to my mouth. I couldn’t resist. Our lips met in a heated kiss that had me reaching around him to palm his ass. What was that about me controlling myself?

I broke the kiss but kept my hands on him. “If we keep doing this, we won’t leave.”

“Who says we have to?”

“Disgusting,” I heard a man say as he walked past us on the sidewalk, drawing my attention to him. He looked at Greer and me like we were trash. Eyes looking us up and down. A curl to his lip.

“Got a fucking problem?” I asked.

“Yeah, you. We don’t need to see that.”

“Yet you’re fine with holding your girl’s hand and being with her in public, right?” I noticed the wedding band telling me they were married.

“That’s different.”

“The hell it is.”

His wife pulled on his arm. “Shut up,” she whispered harshly to him. “Don’t you know who that is?”

“I don’t care. Men are supposed to be with women.”

Greer stepped forward. “Listen, either you walk your ass out of here on your own accord or I remove you. I’ll be damned if I’m going to allow you to talk to us like that. I don’t find you on the street and tell you kissing a woman is nasty. So move the fuck along.”

My hand went to Greer’s back as I came up alongside him. The commotion drew some of my employees out of the shop. They had the bay doors open to let the fresh air in.

“You okay, JJ?”

I replied without taking my eyes off the douchebag in front of me, “Nothing I can’t handle, Keith.”

“Let’s go,” the wife said, pulling harder on her husband’s arm.

He didn’t move. “It’s men like you who are a threat to our children’s education.”

“You mean the one where they learn they don’t have to fit in a box where only a man and woman can be together?” Greer asked. “Where they don’t have to stay the gender they were assigned at birth? Where they can be free to think and figure out who they truly are? Where they don’t have to hide out of fear of being targeted or rejected?” Greer was a calm guy, but I felt and heard the anger rising in him. He was practically vibrating.

“Brainwashing,” the guy spit out.

“All right,” I said. “I’m done with this shit. Either you go or I’m making you.”

He looked me over like he was assessing if he could take me in a fight. I wasn’t as tall as Greer, but I was broad, had muscle on me, and could be a mean son of a bitch. “Fuck you.”

I pulled my arm back to hit him, but Greer caught it.

“He isn’t worth it,” he whispered in my ear. He was right, the guy wasn’t. I still wanted to hit him, and I knew he did too.

“Since you don’t want to listen to your wife,” I spit out. “Let me tell you something. I’m JJ Altair. Does my last name ring a fucking bell? You’re in the wrong goddamned city to be running your mouth like that. This is my shop. This is my fucking boyfriend. If you say one more word, I’m going to punch your teeth down your throat. We clear?”

“I’m going to call the police.” He fumbled, trying to get his phone out of his pocket.

I laughed. “Go right ahead. See how well that works out for you.”

His wife was finally able to pull him away while he held his phone shakily. I hated what my dad did, but I would use my name when I needed to.

Keith still stood there, wrench in hand, watching them leave. “I’ll handle them if they come back.”
