“Please. I get out enough between the office and here. I don’t need to do anything else.”

“I figured you’d go to a bar or a club on the weekends.”

“Not my scene. Besides, I got something good going on. Do you remember Greer from that night you were here? You tended to his brother, Peyton.”

“Yes. Big guy. Both of them are.”

I nodded. “He and I are in a relationship with Dexen Dremest. I’m sure you’ve heard of him since you live in the city.”

His eyes got big. “Two men?” He didn’t ask like he was judging me, just curious.

“It can work. We’re still figuring out the dynamics. If Junior, Pey, and Dom can do it, so can we.”

“Junior? I thought they were with Perry.”

“I call him Junior. It got too confusing when we were growing up between him and his dad having the same name and me and mine. So, I call him Junior, and he calls me JJ instead of Jordan Junior.”

“That’s confusing, and not, at the same time.” He smiled.

I chuckled. “It can be.”

“Dexen is the one who owns Untouchable, right?”

“Mmhhmm. It’s a members-only place with meals, liquor, and lots of bare asses.”

When Corbin didn’t say anything else, I looked over to find him blushing with his head ducked down. “I’ve heard it’s expensive to get in there.”

“It is, but you’re a doctor. You have to make good money.”

“I do, but I have an ex-wife who had a better lawyer than me and took a lot of my money. Hence the older truck. I also live in a rented one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo.”

I shook my head. “Man, that sucks. I’m sorry. If it makes you feel better, my truck is older than yours and I live in a two-bedroom, one-bath apartment with a friend of mine.”

Before he could respond, the back door banged open, causing Corbin to jump. I’d thought about fixing it but decided not to. I liked the warning when someone entered the building.

“Jay, I got your battery! You owe me. I didn’t plan on getting dressed today.” Val would lounge around all day in pajama pants if he didn’t have to leave. He liked being comfortable. He came into the bay and under the truck to stand next to me, looking up at it. He stepped to the front left tire, putting the battery down. “Did you check these?” Val always went to the tires first. He’d seen an accident once where the tire came off a car as it was moving. Turned out the lugs were barely on. “I didn’t, but I will. I wanted to get the oil changed first.”

Val turned and noticed Corbin, who had his hands shoved into the pockets of his jeans. “You’re that doctor, right? The one who was here after the shit hit the fan?”

“I am.” If I wasn’t mistaken, I thought Corbin’s blush came back.

“You did good work. They didn’t get an infection or anything.”

Corbin gasped. “I should hope not. I made sure their wounds were cleaned and they got antibiotics. They didn’t call to report any problems.”

Val shrugged and went back to the truck, checking the tires. Fucking Val and how he always spoke his mind.

We got everything done from down here, so I lowered the truck and started my other work.

“Your tires are a bit low,” Val said to Corbin. “When the weather changes and the temp drops, you have to check the pressure. I got them back to where they’re supposed to be. They also need to be replaced soon, depending on how much you drive. Might not make it through the winter.”

Corbin looked at me like he had no clue what was happening.

“Just bring it in here in a couple months,” I told him. “We’ll check the pressure and the tread. See how you’re doing.”

“Or call Jay on the weekend and I can come down to look at it. I’m not usually busy.”

I turned to him. “Didn’t you just give me shit about making you leave the apartment?”
