JJ

My phone vibrated on the seat beside me the entire way to the fortress. If I had a nicer truck, I could have the texts read to me through the speakers, but I loved my old pickup. Except right now. Because if they were still talking about jerking off, I really wanted to hear about it. Maybe not. I was driving. It was enticing though.

The phone ringing cut through the music I had playing. I turned the volume down and picked up the phone, seeing Dexen’s name. I put it on speaker.

“Miss me?” I asked with a smile on my lips.

“Greer’s in trouble,” Dexen said with a hard, panicked edge to his voice. I could hear him rushing around.

I sat up straighter, my eyes on the road, noting I was only a few minutes from the fortress. “What happened?”

“I’m not sure. He sent a group text to everyone saying someone was trying to get into his house and his security system was down. Greer grabbed a gun so at least he’s armed.”

“Shit.” I hit the gas harder, needing to close the distance between us. “How the fuck did someone take his system down?”

“I don’t know but I’m on my way. By the texts I saw, Peyton is too, and he texted Xaiden. Perry called the cops. Where are you?”

“I’m on his road, almost there.”

“You’ll probably beat the cops. Are you armed?”

“Always in my truck.” I might not like the life I was born into, but I kept a gun in my truck and my apartment. “I’m here.”

“Be careful and don’t give the cops any reason to take you in.”

“I won’t.”

“I love you, Jordan.”

“I love you too.”

I disconnected, not giving much thought to how warm it made me when Dexen or Greer said those words to me. I didn’t have time to delve into that. Not when Greer’s life could be on the line. He was capable as hell, but depending on who he went up against, he might not come out on top. They could have a gun. They could know how to fight.

The gates were open wide. With the system down, nothing was secure here. I sped through them and up the driveway, not seeing another vehicle, so whoever this was snuck in on foot. I put the truck in park and shut it off, pocketing the keys. The person inside didn’t need an easy getaway. I grabbed my gun and got out.

The back porch had broken glass scattered on it as I eased closer, not sure what I was getting myself into and wanting to be smart. I wouldn’t do Greer any good if I was hurt or killed. Glass crunched under my boots while I peered through the broken door into the kitchen. Light shone in through the front windows giving me a view into the living room beyond. Two men were fighting hand-to-hand, one obviously Greer. I didn’t notice a third or fourth person but that didn’t mean they weren’t there.

As quietly as I could, given the glass, I went through the open door, and slid in the house. Neither man noticed me. They kept swinging, kept landing punches. The moves Greer made, fuck, I could tell all that training with X paid off. Greer’s hits were precise, as were his kicks. The way he guarded his body, swung with practiced confidence, it was almost like a dance.

The person he was fighting was dressed in light-gray sweatpants and a matching T-shirt. Clothes easily moved in. Clothes they could run in. It was the dark, nearly black hair that made me pause. The clean-shaven face. The sharp cut of the jawline. The glimpses I got were giving me the bigger picture. One that made my blood run cold because I knew he was just as skilled as Greer.

His eyes landed on me, and I nearly stumbled backward. “Malik?”

It was the opening Greer needed to land a solid punch to Malik’s jaw. “JJ, get out of here,” Greer said, his breath sawing in and out of his lungs. How long had they been fighting? At least neither of them had a gun in hand. If they did, the other would have been dead. I glanced around the room and noticed two guns on opposite sides, not near them.

“Like fucking hell.” I stepped closer in time to watch Malik lunge for Greer, grabbing him around the waist and slamming him into the nearest wall. The pictures which hung there vibrated, one fell to the ground, shattering the glass in the frame. The wall cracked inward from the impact of Greer’s body. I raised my gun, pointed it at the back of Malik’s head. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

He brought his hands up, put them around Greer’s throat and squeezed. “He has something of mine.”

“Fuck you,” Greer gritted out, struggling against him.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“Your boyfriend hasn’t told you about the flash drive he has? That Junior has? The one with every dirty secret there is on your father?” He got in Greer’s face, nose to nose. “I want the drive,” he seethed.

Greer brought his arm up and over, quickly breaking the hold then elbowed Malik in the face. He quickly reversed their positions, putting Malik to the wall, holding him there with his entire body. “You broke into my house and have the balls to try and take something that doesn’t belong to you? JJ, give me your gun.”
