We’re sitting in the kitchen and its dark outside, a lamp is lit in the window and this is pretty cozy. Oh, and we’re doing a couple’s activity...

Carter frown, scratching the back of his head. “Go fish,” he mutters.

Grinning, I take up a card and I’m the one who talked him into this. “Still, think this is a stupid game that’s beneath you now that you’re losing?”

“I’m not losing.” He scowls. “I’m letting you win because I don’t want you to cry.”

“Aww, you do have a heart,” I say, pretending to be touched and he chuckles. He laughs more now than he did in the beginning and even if he still looks like a machine when he knocks on my door, the mechanical expression in his eyes disappears as soon as he sees me.

I’m growing comfortable around him, maybe a little too comfortable since I’m in my pajamas and there’s dirty dishes in the sink, but he wanted the real me and voila.

“This is fun,” I murmur, grinning because I know I’m going to win, “I’ve always wanted to humble a Blackwater soldier.”

Carter shakes his head. “I had a feeling you had a ruthless streak.” His eyes soften and he shrugs. “Maybe that’s why we’re compatible.”

My heart sinks, turning into a splash in my lower belly. I drag a breath. “You think we’re compatible?”

He tenses, slowly looking up over his cards but he doesn’t meet my eyes and I shift in my seat.

“Because I do,” I blurt. “I like hanging out with you, talking to you...,” Letting out a flighty laugh, I add, “I just like being around you.”

Carter slowly puts his cards down. The sound of the traffic outside rings in my ears and the siren fails to overpower the siren in my head that screams,What is wrong with you, why did you say that?

“Fuck, you’re so open with me,” Carter curses, leaning back in his chair and his pecs clench underneath his shirt as If he’s holding his breath. His eyes stir when they look at me. I’ve never seen so much emotion in them before and it’s all directed at me. “Soft.”

I’m not hardened like he is, and it makes me want to smooth out all the rough edges that bother him. “Is that bad?” I whisper.

“Nah, but you make stuff move around in here,” he rubs his chest, “and I don’t know what to do with it.”

Accept it. Honor it and let it do whatever it needs to do.

“I don’t expect anything from you,” I say in a low tone. “I’m just being honest and hey...,” I shrug, “it’s not a declaration of love, I’m just saying that I appreciate you.” I grow flustered when he just stares at me. Putting my cards down, I flare them out on the table. “Aha, I won! Sucks for you...”

“The loser gets a kiss,” Carter growls but I shake my head.

“And the winner?”

“I’ll donate half of this month’s salary to a pet shelter,” he replies and I choke up.What a sweetheart.Carter curls his finger at me. “Now get your little ass over here, and give me my consolation prize.”

Putting my fingers through the chain-link fence, I watch Jean out in the field. The sky’s murky, the air chilly but she doesn’t complain. Her hair is up in two French braids on either side of her head, no makeup on her face and she wears practical clothes and boots.

She has to be the hottest thing I’ve ever seen and her cheeks have turned red from being outdoors for so long. Clasping her hands behind her back, she takes two steps forward while the canine circles her legs, looking up at her in pure devotion. “Sit,” she orders, before raising her hand then adding, “lay down.”

The pup doesn’t rebel even the slightest and my lips curve from how good she is at this. Shit-I’m proud of her, I like everything about her and want to murder anyone who has a problem with her. Her lips have made me addicted and I’ve never had a dependent personality.

I’m starting to feel things and I didn’t expect this to happen. I was supposed to sleep with her and I haven’t even done that, instead I’ve been patient, eased her into me and this is beyond a physical attraction.

Yesterday, I stayed at her place longer than usual. She eventually fell asleep, unable to keep her eyes open after telling me about almost every little detail about her life. I even know what her best friend in elementary school was called and those little details make me feel rich.

Whatever she chooses to divulge, I save in my mind as if I’m suddenly a collector. And she’s my good girl for letting me collect.

I don’t want to disturb her but there’s something she needs to know and I open up the gate.

Her back is turned to me and she doesn’t see me coming. My eyes roam down her frame and I groan at the way her shorts hug her behind. I can’t wait to squeeze her cheeks. She doesn’t hear me coming and doesn’t turn around until the puppy starts growling. I raise a brow, crossing my arms over my chest and Jean’s eyes flare when she sees me.
