My hand clutches harder around her and I glance at her from the corner of my eye. Her face is content and every now and then she bumps her body into mine. Little by little she’s melting into me and it keeps me from worrying too much.

“What are you smiling at?” she asks, but she’s smiling herself.

“Just thinking about how good we are together.”

Her cheekbones tint but she nods. She feels what I feel, we’re on the same page about this and I lift her hand to my mouth, giving it a kiss.

“Troy,” she murmurs and I quirk a brow in question, “there’s something I want to show you.” She licks her lips, “See that shop over there, the one with the red sign?”

I nod, inspecting the auto shop.

“I’ve heard they’re looking for people. Maybe you could drop by someday with your resume?”

Feeling my chest strain, I agree to it and I don’t think anyone’s ever looked after me the way she does. The thing about Charlotte is that shecares. And I’ve never had someone care and the feeling is addictive, it fills me up better than oxygen and I know I can’t let it slip from my fingers.

Fuck, I’m starting to fixate.

I was fixating ever since I saw her, but it’s ramping up. If she keeps being this sweet, I’ll explode on her. Dragging a deep breath, I murmur, “You know, nobody has ever been as nice to me as you are.”

Boring my eyes into hers, I wait for her reaction and her lids flicker.

“You’re Robbie’s cousin...,” she gasps, eyes flaring when I clap a hand over her mouth.

“Stop saying that.” A shudder moves through me. I want to be special. For once in my life, I fucking want to know what it’s like to bespecial.

She shivers, nodding carefully and I take my hand away.

“I’ll stop, ”she whispers. Licking her lips, she looks at me and I brace myself when I get the feeling she’ll storm off but instead she lets me put my arm around her. She doesn’t care that I overreacted just now, and I regret doing it but I can’t stand hearing her say another guy’s name.

“You know what I think,” Charlotte then says carefully, “I think you’re not used to common courtesy. That’s why you think I’m being exceptionally nice.”

What’s courtesy?

Is that when people drink tea and treat each other with kindness and respect?

In my part of town there’s only dog eat dog. There are no beaches or beach houses and more importantly, there are no girls with big hearts. Getting emotional, I rub my nape while waiting for Charlotte to unlock the door and we step inside. As soon as the door closes, I reach for Charlotte’s wrist but she twitches, glancing at me over her shoulder as if suddenly nervous.

“Sorry,” I rasp, forcing down the disappointment. “I won’t touch you again.”

“N...no,” she stutters, “that’s not what that was about.” She drops the keys into a bowl on the console table. “I’m just ticklish.”

She’s lying to spare my feelings and it’s not working.

I think she can tell I want something, and she’s signaling that she’s not ready. Fuck then...I’ll back off, for now...but I will have her. Pulling her hair behind her ear, Charlotte murmurs,

“Do you want to go down to the beach with me later?”

When I nod, she says she just needs to change and rushes upstairs. I clench my fists, catching my own reflection in the mirror and thirst is written all over my face. My teeth dig into my lower lip and I let out a low groan when my legs pull me toward the staircase and I walk upstairs. And I’m not doing the decent thing,

I’m not letting her know I’m coming but I’m purposefully sneaking, so she won’t hear me.

Holding my breath, I watch her in her bedroom, worming out of her clothes and my heart thrashes. I want her so bad and I lean my temple against the wall, groaning before pushing up the door and stepping inside.

Charlotte whirls around, letting out a shriek and she holds her blouse to her chest to cover up that she’s only in her underwear. Her eyes are wide but I don’t move. I just stand there and watch as if I have every right to see her like this.

“You snuck up on me,” she pants and I nod shamelessly. “You can’t do that.”

“I know,” I rasp. “It’s just that when you left me on my own, it gave me some time to think.”
