We chat a bit more on the drive back, the time flying by as we both comment about the weirdness of social media and that robots will probably take over the world one day. I feel light and giddy, laughing about our stupid jokes and taking a silly video of us using a filter that makes our eyeballs bulge out.

Arriving at his apartment, we stop in the garage and Jett tells me to wait there for a moment. I do, bouncing my leg up and down until he returns holding two long garment bags.

“What’s this?” I cock a brow.

“Before we go up, let’s get changed. There’s a bathroom on the main floor down here. I’ll meet you at the elevator?”

I raise my brows and chuckle at the funny request. What does he have planned?

“Okay. Meet you there.”

Giggling, I take the bag from him and place a kiss on his cheek before dashing toward the women’s room and changing.

The dress Jett’s picked for me is exquisite, black and sleek, with a long slit up the side of the leg that would make anyone blush. There are matching black heels inside, and as I slip them on, the height prevents the long dress from dragging on the floor too much. A deep V in the neckline leaves little to the imagination, and I’m glad to be on the small end of the chest spectrum. I don’t know what I’d do with them in this dress otherwise.

Taking in my appearance in the mirror, I pull out my powder compact from the purse I brought with me today and quickly apply a fresh dusting along with a new coat of lip gloss. It’s not anything fancy, but it’ll do.

Walking to the elevator, I see Jett waiting. Men are always done first, it seems, and his new attire is stunning. My breath actually hitches in my chest as he turns around to face me and I meet his green eyes. The man has always looked good, but the tux kicks everything up a notch. Heat pools in my cheeks and far lower, too.

A nervous giggle escapes me. “You look breathtaking. Like literally.”

It feels like I’m seeing him for the first time again, and I walk up slowly.

“I was about to say the same thing.” His smile is wide and genuine. “Every time I see you, you’re more beautiful than the last.”

My gaze drops, and Jett lifts my chin with his hand, warmth melting into me.

“Are you ready for dinner, Macy?”

I chew on my bottom lip for a moment and smile. “Completely.”

When we arrive at Jett’s door after the brief elevator ride, he opens it wide for me, and I stop dead in my tracks. Every surface is covered in rose petals and candles, the pinks and reds and whites filling his monochromatic home with color. I can smell my favorite curry wafting toward us from the kitchen, and gentle violin music plays from somewhere unseen.

Jett takes my hand and guides me inside. Woven through the candles and flowers are twinkling fairy lights, and his small dining table has been beautifully set for two. There’s a long, slim box on one plate, and more candles create a path to his massive balcony, which has been decorated with pillows and soft cushions that beckon me to join them beneath the night sky.

Tears prickle at the corner of my eyes, but this time they’re not from sadness or fear.

“How did you do this? It’s so…” Emotions steal my words for a moment. “So beautiful.”

“I’m magic,” Jett smirks at me.

I raise my eyebrows at him, staring him down.

“All right. One of my subordinates owed me. Shall we?”

It’s all so much, and I burst out laughing, taking his arm once more and finding my seat at the table. He pulls the chair out for me and pours us two glasses of champagne. I take a sip, the delicious taste bubbling across my tongue, and nod down at the box on my plate.

“What’s this?”

“Open it and find out.” Jett’s eyes meet mine coolly.

I set down my glass and open the velvet-covered case. Inside is a gorgeous necklace that must be worth more than I make in a year. The simple white-gold chain comes to an intricate filigree point in the center. It looks like silver vines twisting around each other, diamonds the stars poking through the leaves.

“Oh, Jett. It’s perfect.”

He comes around and fastens the jewelry around my neck, the cool metal resting against my bare neck and collar bones.

“I knew you wouldn’t want anything too gaudy. I’m glad you like it.”
