Macy’s mile-a-minute words have me laughing even more. “Yes. I definitely want this. It’s not like I enjoyed working for my uncle anyway. I just didn’t see a way out before you. Didn’t have a reason to want that.”

I put my hand on her leg and squeeze before turning back to the road.

“Jett.” She takes my hand. “This is great. I know we can find something else for you to do.”

“Well, let’s make that tomorrow’s problem. Today, I’d just like to cut these ties and spend the rest of the evening with you.”

Snaking my fingers between her thighs, I lift the hem of her dress slightly. A small moan escapes Macy’s lips, and then she squeezes her legs together around our joined hands.

“You should probably focus on driving.” She looks around. “Where are you taking me, anyway? Another surprise?”

“Sort of. This was the only chance I had to tell Gio, my uncle, that I’m quitting. I’ve been cleaning that shit out of my life all day. Now, I just have to go make it official, which I’ve also been dreading all day.”

Macy’s eyes meet mine, concern burning behind them. “Do you want me to come with you?”

I smile but shake my head. “No. That’s not a great idea considering he doesn’t know about this week and all the details that go with it. I’ll be fine. I’ve dealt with his temper before.”

Unpleasant memories flit across my mind, and I drop Macy’s gaze, staring at the floor. Pushing back into my seat, I feel the gun at my back press into my spine, providing a layer of comfort. I’ll just have to hope he’s alone and not interested in me enough to make a stink about it. Unlikely, but I can dream.

We close the distance to my uncle’s in a matter of minutes, and I pull around to the back of the building, parking in a tiny, gravel lot littered with trash and spent needles. This place is such a shit hole. I can’t believe that Macy willingly came to it those years ago.

Worry still clings to Macy when I look back at her, and I pull her forehead to me for a kiss.

“I’ll be fine. Just wait here, okay? Lock the doors.”

I step out of the car, allowing myself one more look back at Macy to nod at her.I’ll be fine. I’ll be fine.

Using the key I’ve had for years, I unlock the back door, leaving it that way just in case, and proceed down the hall and to the right to find Gio’s office. I can hear him ending a call when I arrive, and I double-check the weapon at my back.

When his office goes silent, I open the door while knocking on the wood.

Clearing my throat, I kick things off, keeping my voice level and controlled. “Hey. Got a minute?”

Gio looks up from behind his desk and smirks, an evil grin that hints at his true nature. “Well, there he is. You’ve been quite the talk of the town for the past few hours.”

I stifle a cringe, subtly squeezing my hands into fists. I knew I couldn’t trust any of the assholes I work with to keep their mouths shut.

“Oh, really. Well, as expected, they got to be the first to break the news to you. I’m out.”

Pushing up out of his chair, Gio comes around his desk and sits on the edge, kicking a chair in front of it. “Have a seat.”

I smirk back. “No, thanks.”

Gio shakes his head at me, sucking on his teeth and then frowning. “Well, you’ve collected all of your debts. If only you’d shown that kind of work ethic a few weeks ago.”

He folds his arms over his chest, the whirring sound of the AC unit in the window cutting straight through my nerves.

“Why don’t you just take a break? Plenty of work to be done, and you know as much as I do that the Family has been watching our operation closely. They’re looking for new blood and any reason to cut us out. ”

Mirroring his posture, I meet Gio’s eyes. “I’m done. No break. No hiatus. I’m not coming back.”

A mirthless laugh booms from his throat as he exaggeratedly tosses his head back. “Just because you met some girl, you’re fucking debt, I might add, you think you can leave?”

My blood runs cold, and my stomach drops. I’ve covered my tracks fucking well.

“How did you—”

“Your daddy told me you had a girl with you when you bailed him out. Had a nice joke about how you’d have to pay for someone or meet ‘em at work. It got me thinking, and I did some digging. Paid her debt, did she?”
