She reaches to my side and presses down firmly. I flinch, hissing at the burn.

“You should go.” I try to swat her hands away. “I’m a bad man. This is always how it was going to end. You need to leave. There will be others. They’ll want you dead, too, if they find out you were here.”

Her fingers press deeper into my wound, and I grunt.

“Would you stop that? I’m not going anywhere. I’m with you, Jett. I’m staying right here.”

The blare of sirens echoes around the building, and I look to the door and then back at Macy.

“Like I said. Smart bitch.”

I can feel sweat beading on my forehead, and my heartbeat pounds in my ears. “You still need to go. He’s not alone. There are people on the inside. He’ll get out.”

“And I’ll be right here by your side, no matter what. I’m not leaving you. I…” Tears brim at the corner of her eyes. “I love you, Jett. So, stop being an idiot and hang on.”

My eyes go wide, and my heart bursts all in the same blink of an eye. I shake my head but pull Macy’s lips to mine and kiss with everything I have.

“I love you, Macy. I’ve loved you since the moment I saw you.”

Her tears spill free as she smiles, pushing into my side, which hurts like hell.

“I don’t suppose any of those are ambulances?” I quirk a brow at her as the pain stings deeper.

“How am I supposed to know? I just said you two were fighting.” Shaking her head, Macy laughs nervously.

But then the door down the hall is opening again, and I hear several sets of boots running toward us. Police and EMTs flood the space around us, and gloved hands replace Macy’s at my side. More responders run to Gio, who screams about his “fucking hand.”

Bandages quickly circle the place where his fingers should be, and he screams at me. “I’ll fucking gut you, boy! You hear me?! You’re dead!”

One of the officers steps between us and points toward the door.

“Get him to the bus.” The EMTs dressing him pull Gio out through the door as he continues to yell obscenities. “And you, son, how are you doing?”

The first responders are doing something with my injury, and for the life of me, I couldn’t tell you what. I’m too busy staring at Macy as she smiles at me.

“Me?” I smile. “I’ve never been better.”

Epilogue

Macy

The smell of Mom’s roasted chicken and vegetables wafts in from the kitchen, and I join my family at the dinner table. Jett pulls out my chair, and I smile up at him before he takes his seat next to me.

Dad helps Mom carry in the large platters of food and set them on the table. She’s made enough food to feed an army, and I laugh to myself. I’m glad that my appetite is back. Explaining my lack of appearances at dinners and nights out has been a challenge.

“This looks delicious, Mom. Thank you.”

She sits across from me, Dad giving her a kiss on the head before he sits down across from Jett.

“Dolores, you’ve outdone yourself,” Jett compliments.

“Coming from the chef, that’s high praise! I will certainly take it.” My mom smiles and takes a sip of her wine. “You’ll have to teach me your recipe for the salmon next.”

“Can do.” Jett smiles back, nodding.

“So how’s the restaurant been, son? Busy?”

I sigh. “You have no idea, Dad. It’s always packed.”
