He stands and walks toward me. “Tell me, Adrianna.”

“She wants you and told me to back off.” I notice the way his eyes light up. “And before you get too cocky, I wasn’t fighting her because I want this to continue between us. I was fighting her because I told her I had no way out and she still tried to stop me.”

He moves toward me, eyes alight with fire. “Deep down, you don’t want this to end. Admit it, baby.”

I roll my eyes. “I would happily walk out of this apartment and never return if you allowed me to.”

He grabs my hand and pulls me toward him. “I’ve told you many times before, you’re not a talented liar.”

“It’s not a lie.” And although the sex is good, it’s true. If Archer confirmed he’d never tell my family right now, I’d walk out of that door and never come back. He’s an asshole and not the man I want to be wasting my time with.

“How about I make you some pancakes?” he asks.

“Sure, I could eat.”

He smiles. “Can’t you always eat?”

I narrow my eyes, wondering how he knows that. “Perhaps.”

He releases my hand and gets to work making pancakes. It’s strange watching him in the kitchen, as I never would have imagined him cooking anything, even if it is something as simple as pancakes.

“I’ve got to admit I’m proud of your handiwork, but don’t tell anyone else.”

“What handiwork?”

He glances over his shoulder. “Anita. You really put your combat training into practice.”

I feel heat radiate around my body at the way he’s looking at me. “Of course. I’m not about to let her walk all over me.” My brow furrows. “I think she’s stupid for even trying to start a fight with me, considering.”

“Yeah, it surprised me to hear she started it.”

I sit up straighter. “Why the hell would I start a fight?”

He shrugs. “You can be hot tempered, baby girl.”

I clench my jaw. “Only with you.”

He chuckles as he plates up a stack of pancakes and puts them in front of me. And then he grabs the maple syrup and some blueberries out of the fridge. “Buon Appetite.” He winks.

Although I’m annoyed at him for thinking I would start a fight with Anita, my greed wins out.

I dig into the pancakes, moaning. “These are delicious. Are you alway this good at cooking?”

He shrugs. “I have hidden talents. You should try my homemade marinara sauce. It’s pretty good.”

“I might take you up on that. I love food.”

He smirks. “Well, you might fall in love with me once you try it,” Archer teases, but there’s a hint of seriousness in his tone.

I glare at him. “There’s more chance that pigs will fly than me ever feeling anything other than contempt for you.”

A flash of hurt enters his dark eyes. “I doubt that’s true.”

“Believe me, it is. I feel nothing for you beyond enjoying the sex.” It’s surprising that I seem to be under his skin already. “And if you cook good food, then that’s a bonus, I guess.” The look on his face tells me that my words hurt, but they’re true.

How can he expect me to feel anything for him after the way he’s treated me?

An awkward silence falls between us as we both eat our pancakes. Maybe my plan is working a little too well already.
