Pain claws at my chest. If he said that, it means he intends to kill me too, a woman he professed to love merely two days ago.

“Let me worry about my plan. If I pull this off, God knows how many children we’ll save from a terrible fate.”

Tears prickle my eyes as I finally have the confirmation I need. Isiah intends to kill us all, not just my father, but my mother and siblings as well. His hatred for whatever my father did to him is so deeply embedded that there’s no way he can ever truly love me. I wonder then if it was all a ploy to try to keep me blind to the truth, telling me he loves me.

Unable to listen any longer, I turn away and rush down the corridor, accidentally crashing into a cleaning cart and knocking it to the ground.

“What was that?” Isiah asks.

Shit.

I run for the exit. By the time I get to it, I can hear him fumbling with the apartment door. Rushing down the stairs, I try not to fall, knowing he might catch me. A monster who wants me dead, along with the rest of my family.

“Bella!” He growls my name from behind me as I’m about to run down the steps of the apartment building. “Stop.”

Tears are streaming down my face, and I don’t want him to see me like this. I don’t want him to know how much his lies have hurt me. For a moment, I thought I was falling for him, too.

I turn to face him, narrowing my eyes. “Why? So you can murder me here in the street?”

His jaw clenches and he shakes his head. “You don’t know what you heard.”

“I know very well what I heard. You intend to annihilate every member of my family.” I cross my arms over my chest and wait for his response.

“Can we talk?”

“Talk?!” I shake my head. “There’s nothing to talk about and now I really am late meeting Nina.” I clench my fists by my sides. “Goodbye, Isiah.” I turn away, but suddenly his palm is wrapped around the back of my neck as he forces me around to face him.

“You don’t say goodbye to me like that, love.”

My nostrils flare as I stare into those beautiful, bright blue eyes, knowing that they’re a part of his mask. Everything about this man’s appearance is a mask, hiding the truth beneath. He’s a monster with no heart. “I won’t play this game with you anymore. If you want to kill me, then kill me. Otherwise, leave me and my family the fuck alone.” I stare into his eyes, challenging him to make a move.

“You don’t understand,” he mutters.

“I don’t need to understand.” I turn to leave, but he grabs my wrist.

“Please, Bella.” There’s desperation in his tone. “Just let me explain.”

“Fine, explain,” I say, placing my hands on my hips.

He glances at a homeless man who has been lingering nearby, watching us. “Not here.”

“Here is as good a place as any.”

He starts forward and grabs my wrist forcefully. “No.” He shakes his head. “I said not here.” There’s a firmness in his tone as he drags me down the steps toward his car.

“Where are you taking me?”

“There’s only one place I can explain everything to you.” His expression is haunted as he unlocks the Porsche. “Get in.”

I hesitate for a moment, my heart pounding in my chest as I take in Isiah’s serious expression. The feeling of his fingers on my wrist and the intensity of his gaze makes me feel uneasy, but eventually I nod and reluctantly get into the car.

Silence fills the air between us as Isiah drives to an undisclosed location. If he’s finally going to explain everything, I sense there’s no use pushing him to tell me where we’re going.

My stomach twists in knots as he keeps stealing glances toward me out of the corner of his eye, but he doesn’t say a word. Only the deep hum of the engine falls between us as we drive through town. I can’t help but feel a deep sense of dread about what he’s going to do to me considering what I heard.

What is his plan? To take me somewhere and kill me before he takes care of the rest of my family?

I’m shaking in fear, regretting getting into the car with him, as maybe now I’m a liability since I know his intention is to kill my family. Grabbing my cell phone carefully, I type a text to Nina, but he sees.
