“Do you have any proof?” Gio asks. “A photo, perhaps?”

I can feel the heat of her rage seeping from her pores as she glares at both of us. “I had a photo until Isiah threw my phone against the wall and smashed it to pieces.”

“Who’s lying now?” I say in a cool voice.

“That seems highly unlikely, Bella.”

Bella growls like a feral animal. “You are fucking crazy if you think you can trust that man.” She thrusts her finger in my direction.

“You’re being hysterical,” Gio says.

I can hardly contain the smirk that graces my lips as I watch her turn a scarlet red in pure rage.

“You’re a fucking idiot!” she shouts, shaking her head. “If you won’t do your duty to protect this family, then I’ll have to!” She storms out of the room.

Gio sighs heavily. “I apologize about that. Don’t let her outburst put you off, though. Most of the time, she’s not so emotional.”

Bella is right, the guy is a fucking idiot, thankfully. If he would only listen to his daughter, he would save himself and his family from devastation and ruin. I hate that it makes my admiration for my soon to be wife grow. She’s been on my mind far too much lately and it’s becoming a little irritating. As she’s supposed to end up dead and buried just like the rest of them, just like Aiden was at their hands. Yet the idea of ending her is becoming less appealing by the day.

“Of course not. She doesn’t faze me,” I say, but it’s a lie.

Gio smiles. “No, I don’t suppose she would. I hear rumors that you dealt with some rats rather brutally over the weekend.”

“Where did you hear that?” I ask, wondering if he has someone spying on me.

“News spreads fast in London and I have my ways to hear it.”

I arch a brow. “Are you spying on me, Gio?” I ask, keeping the question lighthearted.

He laughs, shaking his head. “Of course not. I simply have a couple of contacts in London who keep me informed.”

That basically means he’s spying on me. If this were anyone else, I’d get angry and make an example out of him, but I need to remain in his good books, at least for now. I want to watch while everything he’s built crumbles in front of his face and then I’ll end his life.

Not that it would do much for him having someone spy on me, as they’ll never learn the truth. I’ve kept the truth about my identity and intentions too well hidden.

“Fair enough,” I say, standing. “If that’s all—”

“Actually, I have an event I’d like you to attend at my club, Insignia, on Saturday.”

My heart starts to beat harder and faster because that’s the kiddy auction he’s talking about. “What kind of event?” I ask.

“It’s merely a party with some politicians. A work event to make more contacts.”

I nod in response, which means that the auction isn’t being held in the main club. It can’t be, as I know Gio wouldn’t invite me knowing my opinion on the matter. “Sure, I’ll be there.”

“Great, I’ll ensure Bella accompanies you as your date.” He claps me on the back, the physical contact from him making me feel sick. And yet, I plaster on a fake smile. “You two need to try to get over this rivalry you seem to have going on before the wedding in three weeks.”

“I wouldn’t call it rivalry.”

“No?” Gio questions.

I shake my head. “Merely foreplay.”

He laughs, and although I knew he’d find it funny, it surprises me anyway as we’re talking about his daughter. Most fathers worth anything wouldn’t like a man talking that away about his daughter. “Fair enough. I’ll see you later.” He nods toward the door.

I stand and take my leave, a flurry of thoughts racing through my mind.

I had planned to break into Insignia and stop the auction, but now I’m invited to Gio’s party. It makes it all the more complicated. It’ll be nearly impossible for me to sneak away from the party and into the auction without being seen, especially with an already suspicious fiancée by my side.
