“Yep.”

“Logan, why?”

“What ‘why?’, Mom? Why I want to love and be loved?”

“I didn’t mean…you deserve to be loved, I just––” She swallowed hard and blurted, “Is this because of the accident last year? Are you trying to…? Why would you all of a sudden…?”

“It’s not like that. It’s not all of a sudden. I’ve always been this way. It just didn’t matter before. I had Sophy and Jordan and I was happy.”

“But you’ve never said anything!” she demanded suddenly, and he huffed a laugh.

“Why would I? Seeing how you’ve treated me this past year, only indicated that would have been a colossal mistake. Maybe on some subconscious level I was protecting myself from you.”

“Is this a phase? Like part of the grieving process?”

He laughed. “Sure. That’s it, Mom. I’ll be in thisphasefor a long time though, so don’t hold your breath.”

She looked infuriated and like she wanted to say something more, but he had said what he had intended, and had tolerated his quota of ridiculous shallow-minded questions for today. He stood up abruptly, indicating to his mother that this was her cue to get going. She was just gaping at him in disbelief, but he wasn’t having any of it. “Listen, before you start asking me more stupid shit, let me spell it out for you. I’m bisexual. Samuel is my lover. He is moving in to live with me next week in this house. I love him very much. As soon as I know he’s willing, I will commit to him legally in any way he sees fit.” He took a deep breath, then reached for her hand. She met him halfway, her chin trembling. “I love you, Mother. I still do. But I swear to you, you either accept this and Samuel and be on your best fucking behavior including getting Dad and Lucas up to speed, or I swear to God, I will never ever speak to you again.”

Debbie let out a sob, and as her fingers went slack in his hand, he refused to let go. Instead, he reached with his other hand, clasping her small hand with his own. “Should the way I live my life now, be too much for you to handle, please know, Mother, I’m not going anywhere. This town is my home. Should you feel my love for Samuel is something you can’t accept,” he gave his mother a pointed look and let her hand drop from his, “Feel free to continue avoiding me and consider me dead. Move forward, knowing you have only one son, who is surely never to disappoint you with the decisions he makes in his life.”

She pulled away, stunned at his words, her face wet with tears. “Logan, I don’t care!”

It was his turn to be taken aback. He let her compose herself, and she furiously wiped her tears away.

“I only want you to be happy. I’m sorry. You can’t seriously expect me not to react. This stuff…it’s something I’ve never considered for you. It doesn’t mean I’ll disown you or treat you with any less––” She choked on a sob and this time he pulled her into a hug.

“I’m sorry. I was scared. I shouldn’t have…I should have been there for you, regardless of if you asked me or not. I should have tried harder, and I shouldn’t have meddled influencing your father in regard to the business. I’m sorry I failed you.”

To hear her say it wasn’t nearly enough, but he felt himself relax and consider the possibilities for their relationship in the future. To live in complete social isolation with Sammy had never been something he wanted to do, but he sure as shit wasn’t going to force him into some toxic environment considering his own terrible experience with his family.

They’ve been together for two months, one week and two days. Yeah, he fucking counted every day, and Sammy was yet to hear anything from his sister Sarah or her family. Things had been awkward between him and Lucas for a long while, but his brother at least did the bare minimum before their last dreadful dinner and texted him, tagged him in dumb memes, and shared countless videos and movie recommendations. Sammy had heard fuck all from Sarah in years. He always downplayed it, like it was okay for her to cut him off from her life even though he was her only living family member. But the fact that he mentioned her now and then was enough evidence that her absence bothered him.

His mom tightened her hold on him, leaning in full force in the embrace and it just felt good to have this back again. It was bittersweet that everything had to fucking implode for them to really reach for each other and talk. They had always been close before and talking to his mom had never been difficult. The past few years had flipped everything about their relationship upside down and Logan suddenly had the realization that they had been acting like strangers for way too long. He hoped that if they both made an effort, they could turn this shit show, their relationship had turned into, around.

She let go of him and pulled away slowly, a look of determination on her face. “I promise you, I’ll make this right.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but his phone rang, and it was Sammy. He was smiling wide, and that was an instant relief. “Morpheus is going to be fine. They’ll keep him overnight for observation. He’s already back to his monkey business. I think I might stay with him tonight and come home tomorrow morning.”

“I’m coming over then. I feel better.” Sammy looked concerned and unsure. Logan was quick to reassure him, “I’ll drive slowly. I’ll be very careful. I promise. I can be there in thirty minutes.”

Sammy looked like he still wanted to protest, but then just smiled softly and said, “Okay, babe. I’ll see you soon. Bring us our blanket.”

“Okay, see you in a bit.”

He hung up and this time the look on Debbie’s face was one ofaww. He quickly grabbed his jacket, scooped the big Sherpa blanket from the couch, then slipped his boots on. His mom couldn’t help but grin at him.Theirblanket was a gift she had gotten him a few years back and had stitched different patches of things Logan liked. It was meant to be his “think positive” blanket. Sammy had loved going through each patch and asking him about it. Most of them inevitably reminded him of a fun story about his family, about Sophy and Jordan, Dave and Steph. It had becometheirblanket because Sammy loved discovering new things about Logan as they snuggled.

He chuckled and pulled her in for another hug. “I told you, I love him.”

“I can’t wait to meet him.” Her voice came out muffled but sure.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

Sammy

Logan barrelled into the small animal hospital with the heavy blanket folded over his shoulder, his thick jacket and boots covered in snow. Sammy felt almost silly at how quickly he melted at the sight of him. He buried himself in Logan’s arms and kissed him, feeling a great sense of relief. His man was already looking much better, and their fur baby was going to be okay. There was nothing else he cared about but to be with his little tribe right now.

He led Logan to the observation area where Morpheus was being held. The doctor was just stepping out and he briefed Logan on his condition. Some of his fur may fall off, that was from the effect of the low temperatures he had endured whilst submerged in the lake, but otherwise he would make a full recovery. It was important they were careful in the upcoming weeks and made sure his fur was dry and clean. They both huffed in unison, because good luck getting Morpheus to hold back from having fun and staying clean at the same time.
