“I think you did a fantastic job with your last film,” he said, making conversation.

Lana stopped and looked at him. “Oh? You saw it?”

“Yeah.” So, what if it was a sappy romantic movie? It wasn’t weird that he went to see it, was it? He didn’t have to tell her he went alone. Three times.

“What was it about it that you liked?” Her expression turned curious.

He swallowed, unsure of what he would say. He loved watching her on film. The parts where she was in the arms of another man about killed him, though. “You portrayed your character well.”

“Thank you.” Her gaze dipped, and she continued to dry her hair.

“Please, sit down.” He motioned to the couch.

“I don’t think I should. I’m still soaked.”

She looked extremely uncomfortable. “Do you want to change? I’m sure I have something.”

“Could I?” She bit her lower lip. “I don’t want to impose.”

“Not an imposition at all. Go ahead.”

She rummaged through his dresser and found a few things, then changed in the bathroom. By the time the coffee was ready, she’d come out. She wore his sweatpants and a black t-shirt of his, and even though she should have looked frumpy, she was lovely. He handed her the Styrofoam cup, and she cradled it between her hands as she sat down. “Thanks.”

Hayden left the room and quickly changed into dry clothes as well, then came back and sat next to Lana on the couch. His stomach grumbled and she nudged him. “Hungry?” She held a smile in her eyes.

“Yeah. I haven’t eaten yet.”

“Neither have I. Let’s order room service.” She grabbed the menu and curled her legs beneath herself.

He tried not to stare at her, but it was impossible. Her wet hair held a soft curl, and a rosy tint graced her cheeks. Tiny raindrops still clung to her eyelashes. He wanted to wipe them off, but restrained himself. He wasn’t her boyfriend anymore. That was too intimate of a gesture.

Pain stabbed through him and he looked away.

“Ooh, they have protein shakes.”

He made a face. “You still drinking those?”

“They have a chocolate one. That’s what I want.” She grinned and handed him the menu. “What are you getting?”

He skimmed the list. “Bacon and eggs.”

“You’re going to clog up those arteries some more, huh?”

He scoffed. “It’s a normal breakfast. What about you? Chocolate for breakfast doesn’t sound very healthy.”

She picked up the room phone and dialed, then covered the mouthpiece. “It’s a plant-based smoothie. It’s good for you.”

“Uh-huh. Right.”

She stuck her tongue out at him before room service answered, and she gave them their orders. He chuckled. She was still as playful as ever. After she hung up, she tucked her hands between her knees. “So, what have you been up to lately?”

Hayden stared at the floral pattern on the couch. “The usual, I guess. Work. Visiting Mom on the weekends, when I’m not on location.”

Lana’s expression turned soft. “How’s she doing?”

“She’s fine. She misses Dad, of course.” A swelling in his throat made him swallow.

“I heard he passed.” She put one hand on his knee. “I’m sorry.”
