Colton shifted on the couch. “Okay. I see how you could think that.”

“If he could have a tie into the main character’s past, that would be more impactful.” She drank the rest of her cocoa and set the cup down.

Colton’s mind reeled. “What if he were related to him?”

“Yes! You elude to the uncle’s disappearance, but you never follow through with that thread. If the stalker was the uncle, that would make it even better.”

“You’re brilliant!” Colton pulled Remi close and kissed her forehead. It was an impulsive thing to do, and he regretted it immediately when she let out a little gasp.

“Sorry.” He shrank back. “I just got excited. I’m so happy I showed this to you. I knew you would have great input.” He tried to calm his emotions as he sat back. Remi was so smart. He was such a jerk for letting their relationship wane. If he’d kept in touch, it’s possible their relationship would be so much closer. The realization made acid burn in his throat. If he lost Remi, it would be his own fault.

She pulled her leg up and wrapped her arms around it. “It’s a great script. You should pitch it. I bet it would sell.”

“If it sells, will you come to the premiere with me?” He shouldn’t have said it, but it just popped out of his mouth. He waited to see what she would say.

Remi smiled, although it looked a bit forced. “Of course.”

“Really? You’re not just saying that, only to back out later?”

“Really.” She put her hand on his. “I wouldn’t miss it.”

“Thanks.”

She swiveled and grabbed his remote. “Let’s watch a movie.”

They picked something suspenseful, and Remi settled in beside him. As the movie played, she gradually moved closer to him, until she was leaning on his shoulder, her eyes closed. He smiled. Since when couldn’t Remi finish a movie without falling asleep?

When the movie ended, he gently nudged her. “Hey,” he whispered, but she didn’t move.

He let her sleep on him for another thirty minutes before he decided they would both have back problems the next day if they stayed that way any longer. He shifted and gently slid his arms under her. Then he lifted her. He half expected her to wake, but she didn’t.

Colton carried her to the bed and tucked her in. She rolled to her side and hugged the pillow. “Thanks, Brooke,” she said.

He chuckled. “You’re welcome.”

“Do you think this will work?” she mumbled.

He crouched down beside her. She looked so peaceful. He didn’t realize she talked in her sleep. He smiled and brushed a strand of hair from her forehead. “Do I think what will work?”

“Do you think Colton will fall in love with me?”

He froze, his fingers still touching her skin. “What?” It came out loud, and he cringed. He didn’t want to wake her. When she didn’t answer, he lowered his voice. “Why do you want him to fall in love with you?”

“You know,” she said, like she was talking to a child, “because I’ve been in love with him forever.”

His pulse accelerated. “You have?”

She didn’t respond.

“Remi?”

She took in a breath but didn’t say anything else. He contemplated waking her to ask if she really meant it but decided against that. She was obviously talking in her sleep. But did that mean she was telling him the truth?

His mind reeled as he brushed his teeth and got ready for bed. Remi was in love with him? Then why did she act so strange after he kissed her? Had he offended her? Hehadacted like it was a ploy to get the teenagers away from him.

The more he thought about it, the more he realized what a jerk move he’d made. Instead of coming out and telling Remi he was attracted to her, he’d pretended like he needed to kiss her to get the kids away from them. He was such an idiot.

He wasn’t quite sure how to fix it, but he knew he had to soon. They only had one evening left together.
