“You should dry off.” He grabbed a towel and put it around her shoulders.

“Thanks.” Her gaze dropped.

They both toweled off as best they could before moving into the other room. His heart pounded. Did he really think he was falling in love with Remi?

He pointed to the couch. “Have a seat.”

Instead of sitting, Remi went over to the coffee maker and rummaged around in the basket. “They have hot chocolate! Want some?”

He shook his head, chuckling. “No. It’s eighty degrees outside.”

Remi tore open the packet. “Why does everyone say that?”

“Because everyone else thinks you’re crazy for drinking hot chocolate in the summer.”

“The rain made me cold.”

“Come on, you’d drink it even if you weren’t cold.” He challenged her with his gaze.

She nodded. “You’re right.” After she made her cup of cocoa, she sat beside him. “So, tell me the super secret thing.”

He cringed. Why had he said anything? It was a moment of weakness. He wasn’t thinking clearly, and now he wished he could take it all back. The screenplay was amateur. She was going to hate it. The whole plot seemed stupid now.

He sighed. He couldn’t take it back. Maybe Remi could help him make it better. “I’ll show you.”

He crossed the room to the closet and pulled his screenplay from where it was tucked in his suitcase. “It’s probably terrible,” he said as he handed it to Remi.

She scanned the top page before her eyes lit up. “A screenplay? You wrote this?”

“Yeah,” he said, nerves making his stomach clench.

She pulled him down to the spot beside her. “I want to read it.” She set her cup of hot cocoa on the end table beside her.

Colton had no idea how nerve-wracking it was to sit beside someone while they read something you poured endless hours and all of your heart into. And not just anyone. Remi. He desperately wanted her to like it.

She turned to the last page, no expression on her face. When she was done reading, he couldn’t stand it any longer. “What did you think?”

A grin spread across her face. “I think it’s brilliant.”

“You do?” Relief cascaded over him. He took in a deep breath and released it.

“Yes. I love the diary. The passages are so eerie and unexpected, yet you tie everything in together in the end.”

Colton grew excited. “Did you like the hidden room? Was it too cliché?”

Remi slapped the arm of the couch. “It was perfect. Don’t you dare take that out.”

“What about the love interest? Was it too unbelievable that she’d been in love with him all this time without saying anything?”

Remi stilled and looked down at her lap. “I think it’s fine.”

He leaned closer to her. “Just fine? What aren’t you saying?”

“It’s believable.” She picked up her cocoa cup and sipped from it.

“Anything else?”

She paged through the script once more. “I think you should give the stalker more backstory. He seemed flat to me.”
