“It’s much better now.” His smile made the butterflies take flight in her stomach. The band began playing a new song and he motioned to the dance floor. “Shall we?”

“Sure.”

Colton took her hand and they walked to the center of the room, where he slid his arm around her waist and pulled her to him in a fluid motion and they began to move to the music. His touch was electric, and the feel of being in his arms sent her heart into her throat. It felt so good to be near him. So right.

He leaned toward her ear. “Have you figured out yet what you said to me in your sleep?”

This again? Her face heated. “No, and I wish you’d just forget it.”

“Oh, I don’t think I can do that.”

“Why not?”

“It’s too good.” His lips brushed against her temple, and her butterflies intensified. Did he do that on purpose?

Remi decided a change of subject was best. “How are things with your father today? Have you spoken to him?”

“I did see him this morning. He’s pushing me and Liz to keep our fake relationship going, but I told him I can’t do that. I’m ending things.”

“I’m sure you want your own love life back.” Remi inwardly cringed. She didn’t want Colton to start talking to her about his love life.

He ran his thumb across her back and whispered in her ear. “Yes, I do.”

More shivers cascaded down her back.

“You look beautiful tonight,” he said, his breath tickling her ear.

Her cheeks once again heated in a blush. He’d never called her beautiful before. “Thanks.”

“I like your hair down. It looks nice.”

“You look good as well.” And he smelled heavenly. Whatever cologne he had on was musky and woodsy, and it made her feel all tingly.

He smiled and pulled her even closer. They danced through several songs, and Remi only faltered on her heels twice. Both times Colton caught her before she fell to the floor.

“Want to go for a walk? I kind of want to go somewhere quieter.”

Just being with Colton was amazing. Dancing was fun, but it was hard to talk over the music. Plus, if they were alone, she could maybe get up the courage to tell him her feelings. Just the thought of that sent a wave of nerves through her. She wasn’t sure if she could, but she had to try.

“Sure.”

CHAPTER24

Colton held the door open for Remi. After she walked outside she suddenly stopped. “Sorry. I have to get these shoes off.” She slipped out of her heels and picked them up. “Much better.”

He chuckled. That was so Remi. He put a hand on her lower back. “You could have found some flats.”

“I wanted to wear my tennis shoes, but Brooke wouldn’t let me.”

He laughed and motioned to a bench near a fountain in the courtyard. “Do you want to sit for a minute?”

“Okay.” She dropped her shoes on the grass and took a seat.

Colton sat down beside her. Her blonde hair shone in the moonlight. He’d never seen her dressed up like this. She hadn’t even worn a dress to the dance five years ago. She looked amazing. But, then again, she’d looked amazing soaking wet last night. She was everything he wanted, and he was not going to lose her again.

“Do you remember that magic kit you bought from that store downtown?” Remi asked.

He nodded and smiled, remembering the plastic top hat with the hidden compartment inside. “Yeah. I thought that was the greatest thing.”
