“You made me sit and watch magic show after magic show. And you were really terrible at it, so I could always see how the trick was done.” She laughed, the sound echoing off the resort buildings around them.

“Hey, I wasn’t terrible.”

“Yes, you were.”

“You never told me.” He leaned close and tapped her nose with his index finger.

“That’s because I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”

“Sweet of you.”

She folded her hands together in her lap. “I should have known back then you’d become an actor. You always loved being in front of people, hamming it up.”

“I was obsessed with drama club in high school.”

She let out a laugh. “You totally were. Such a drama nerd.”

“Hey, that’s not a thing. I think I should be referred to as Drama King.”

She lifted one eyebrow. “You’re royalty now? Boy, you sure think highly of yourself.”

He chuckled and put his arm on the back of the bench, his fingers resting near her skin. He wanted to touch her, but he still wasn’t sure if what she’d said in her sleep was garbage or if she really had feelings for him. “What I think of myself isn’t as important as what you think of me.”

Her face flushed and she looked toward her lap. The soft gurgle of the fountain filled the silence between them. “I think you’re cool,” she finally said.

That was good. He would work with that. “I’ll take it.”

“Are you close with your sister? Do you get to see her often?” Remi brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Jules? We talk a couple of times a month. She’s doing well in Silver Creek. She opened a bakery, but I suppose you probably know that.”

Remi nodded. “She makes the best macarons.”

He shifted and his fingers brushed the exposed skin on her shoulder. He moved his hand back for fear he was trying too hard. “She loves baking. I’m glad she’s fulfilling her dreams.”

“Is she dating anyone?”

“Not that she’s told me. Of course, she probably wouldn’t tell me unless it started to get serious.”

Another couple entered the courtyard. The woman giggled as they walked past them in the darkness, then they headed toward the garden area.

Colton’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out to see his father’s name on the screen. He sent the call to voicemail and slid his phone back in his pocket.

“Who was that?” Remi asked.

“Just my father. I’ll text him later. I’m sure he just wants to talk about our flight in the morning, or something.”

His phone went off again, and he rolled his eyes. He didn’t want to interrupt his time with Remi. He had to get up the courage to talk to her. Really talk before it was too late. He held down the power button until his phone powered off.

“Are you sure it’s not important?” Her eyebrows were pulled down in concern.

He picked up Remi’s hand, threading his fingers through hers. “This is more important. There’s something I really need to tell you.”

Two men entered the courtyard and crossed to the fountain. They were talking about a business transaction, and they stopped a few yards from the bench. Colton silently cursed them.

“What is it?” Remi asked.

“Let’s go for a walk.”
