A loud knocking noise came from inside his room, and he jerked back from Remi.

“Are you expecting someone?”

“No.”

The knocking turned frantic, and Colton rushed inside to answer his door.

Liz stood there, her hands wringing. “Colton! Come quickly. Your father’s been stabbed.”

CHAPTER25

Colton’s head reeled. “Stabbed? How? What happened?”

Liz shook her head. “I don’t know. Your father called me when you didn’t answer your phone. Some crazy guy attacked him at a restaurant. He said he’s your biological father. It’s all over the news.”

Remi gasped. “That’s terrible.”

Colton felt horrible for ignoring his father’s phone calls. “Is my father okay?”

Liz exhaled. “He lost quite a lot of blood, but he’s not unconscious. They’re going to do emergency surgery as soon as they can fly the surgeon in. Your father is very upset and asking for you.”

Colton’s tongue felt like a dry sponge in his mouth. He turned to Remi.

“Go!” she said, motioning for him to leave. “Text me later, when you can.”

“I will.” He followed Liz to the resort entrance.

“The limo is waiting. Just be prepared. There’s a lot of paparazzi.” She pushed open the door and the flashes of light went off.

“Is it true your parents forged your birth certificate?”

“Were you aware that your biological father was a criminal?”

“Were you stolen at birth?”

Colton raised his hand to shield his face, each question stabbing into him. “No comment.”

Liz grabbed his arm and pushed them through the crowd. The driver opened the door, and he rushed inside. He scooted over so she could climb in.

“Are you okay?” Liz asked once they were on the way to the hospital.

“I’m still processing everything.”

“Did you know…?” She left the rest of the question hanging.

“I found out recently. My father’s been receiving threatening notes. He didn’t want to call the police.”

“Oh, dear.” Liz turned to stare out the window.

“I should have insisted. What was I thinking?” Colton scrubbed his hand over his face.

“You couldn’t have known.”

“I had a gut feeling.” He’d been bothered by it. Why didn’t he do anything?

“Your father has a very…strong personality. It’s difficult to get him to do anything he doesn’t want to.”

“Yeah.” This was true. Still, he should have taken the notes more seriously.
