What was going on? Why was Brooke changing her tune all of a sudden? “What happened to purging him?”

“Look, I’ll be honest. I didn’t think Colton would give you the time of day. I thought once you saw how stuck-up and materialistic he is you’d get turned off and your crush would be gone. I never thought he’d pester the staff to give you his number. Do you know what this means?” Brooke’s voice rose until it squeaked.

Oh. My. Word. Brooke thought Colton would brush her off? What kind of a guy did Brooke think he was? “It means he’s still a nice guy,” she muttered.

“Well, yeah. But it also means you have a chance. Don’t you see? He snuck away from his girlfriend to send you a message. I never thought he would do that.”

“Yeah. You thought he’d treat me like trash. I can’t believe you convinced me to come out here thinking he was going to totally break my heart.” She shoved Brooke’s shoulder. “How rude.”

Brooke tossed her hands up into the air. “He didn’t. Okay? You actually have a chance. What are you going to wear?”

Remi snorted and waved her hand at the floor. “Nothing. My suitcase won’t open.”

“Well, that will get his attention.” Brooke jumped off the bed and began working the zipper, and it came open after a couple of tries. Brooke gasped when she saw inside.

“What? Did my shampoo leak? Are my clothes ruined?” Remi leaned over, but everything looked fine.

“This is what you brought?” Brooke held up one of her favorite T-shirts between her fingers, like it was dirty.

What a snob. Like she would wear evening gowns or something. “So?”

“You can’t win Colton over wearing these. Seriously, Remi, did you even try?”

Remi scoffed and tried to kick her sister, but she moved out of the way. “So mean. Who are you, the fashion police? You know I don’t care about that stuff. And Colton liked me just fine in T-shirts before. I’m not going to change who I am.”

Brooke rolled her eyes so hard Remi marveled that they didn’t cycle all the way around. “I didn’t say to change who you are. You simply need to show him you’re just as pretty as that Liz girl.”

Remi stared down at her fingers. “But…I’m not.”

“What?” Brooke stood and put her arm around Remi. “What are you talking about? You’re beautiful. You just need…maybe a haircut. And some makeup.”

“I don’t like all that stuff on my face.”

“It doesn’t have to look like that. Let me do it. I’ll make it look natural.”

Remi made a face. “I don’t want to change myself for a man.” She shook off her sister’s arm. “I like me the way I am. And if Colton doesn’t like me this way, then he can go jump in a lake.”

“But—”

“No,” Remi said, standing. “I’m serious. Colton gave me his phone number because he wants to reconnect.” She motioned to her T-shirt and sweats. “This is who he wants to connect with.”

Brooke sighed. “All right. Whatever. I’m going to change and go sunbathe on the beach.” She glanced at the large sliding glass door that looked out at the ocean. “The outside is calling to me.”

“Perfect. I’m going to change out of my wet clothes, get comfy, and finish the code work I was doing.”

Brooke’s jaw dropped. “You brought yourwork?”

“Of course. Why else did you think I brought my laptop?” She tossed her sister a ‘well duh’ look.

“I don’t know. Surfing the net? Are you serious right now? You’re going to sit inside and do code work instead of going out on the beach with me?”

“The sun makes my skin itch.”

The look on Brooke’s face couldn’t be described in words. “Then why did you choose the beach for your honeymoon?”

Remi shrugged. Wasn’t going to a tropical paradise something everyone did for their honeymoon? “Tavon likes the heat.”

“Oh, come on. Let’s go outside. You need sun. You look like Casper had a baby with Bella after she became a vampire.”
