Her sister was such a pest. But she wouldn’t let up unless Remi gave in. “All right. Stop your moaning. I’ll go outside with you.”

She didn’t care about the next few hours, anyway. She gripped Colton’s card so tightly it dug into her palm. She had his number. Colton wanted to see her. That was all that mattered. This trip wasn’t going to be a waste of time after all.

CHAPTER4

Colton stared down at his phone while his father droned on about what to do during dinner tonight, like he didn’t know how to act in front of the cameras. What did his father think he was? A bumbling fool? He didn’t care about tonight’s dinner anyway. He was much more interested in what might happen after dinner. He couldn’t wait to hear from Remi.

“Colton?”

Colton looked up from his phone. “Sure, Dad. That’s fine.”

Liz cringed and gave him a subtle, ‘that wasn’t the right response,’ look. His father was less subtle. “Can’t you pay attention for two minutes? What are you doing? Playing a game on your phone?” He snatched it away.

Colton scowled. “No. I wasn’t playing a game.” He was waiting for Remi to text, but he wasn’t going to say that to his father. He’d have a cow. “I just don’t understand why you think it’s difficult to pretend to date someone. Why do we have to have all these talks about it?”

“I don’t want you to be caught off guard. We have to get our stories straight. If the press asks you how long you’ve been dating, what are you going to say?”

“No comment.” Colton reached out and grabbed his phone back. “See? Easy.”

“The public will want details. Now, listen. You’ve been secretly dating Liz for three months. You came here for a private getaway.”

“Then, why are you here?”

Watching the blood first drain from his father’s face and then rush back to it was fascinating. Even the bald spot on his head grew bright red. “Colton, I’m warning you. If you don’t take this seriously—”

A text came through and Colton jumped up. “Sorry, Dad. I’ll take it more seriously. From now on, I’ll be totally enamored with Liz. We’re cool, right?” He put his fist out toward Liz.

“Yeah,” Liz said, giving him a lame fist bump. She looked like she’d rather be anywhere but there. He once again wondered what his father had said to her to get her to go along with this charade.

“Where are you going?” his father asked.

“I’m going to go freshen up and get ready for our date tonight. Unless I’m not allowed to shower for some reason.” He knew he was being a bit of a brat but he didn’t care.

“Go,” his father said, stepping back.

“See you later.” Colton left, relief flooding over him. He’d gotten a text from Remi. Finally. He wanted to read it. But just to be sure no one saw it, he waited until he was locked in his room alone to pull out his phone.

Thanks for sending me your number.

That was all it said. He chuckled. That was just like Remi. She wasn’t one to mince words. Instead of texting her back, he pressed call.

She picked up on the second ring. “Hello?”

“Remi. It’s so amazing you’re here. I’d love to catch up. I wasn’t just saying that.” Colton unzipped his suitcase and began putting his clothes in the closet. He still needed to change.

“I’d like that.” The sound of wind whistling against the microphone came through. Was she on the beach?

He walked to the sliding glass door and looked out. “What are you doing?”

“Brooke made me sit in the sun. Something about looking like a vampire.”

Funny. That reminded him of the computer setup she’d had in her basement back in high school. That was her lair. He could see her at her computer, writing some complicated code or playing a game. Not that she never went outside. They’d go bike riding when they were bored in the summer or they would mess around at the park. But she didn’t love the heat, so that was usually in the morning or the evenings. In the hot afternoons they would eat popsicles and play games inside.

He scanned the beach but couldn’t find them. “Where are you? Do you mind if I come sit with you? I have some time before dinner.”

“That sounds good. We’re near the scuba rental stand.”

His gaze traveled to the rental shack and landed on Remi and her sister. “I see you. I’ll be there in a second.”
