“All I did was coordinate the subcontractors. It wasn’t that big of a deal.”

“Yes, it was, and you did a lot more than coordination. You were smack dab in the middle of it, making sure everything was done correctly.”

“Had to make sure that your little kingdom didn’t succumb to the water.”

“Well, I’m thankful you came to my rescue because Olivia and Zane are in full reconciliation mode and didn’t need me there to witness it.”

“Are they celebrating their love?”

“Yes,” she said with a smile. “In every room in the house.”

“Good for them.”

“I don’t have the details of their reunion but expect to get them this evening.”

“At the weekly Sunday family dinner?”

“Yes.” She pressed her hand against his chest. “It’s just been us girls since my Daddy passed, but perhaps that will soon change.”

“Really?”

She shrugged her shoulders and picked at a loose thread. “You never know, not that I’m making assumptions about anything.” Looking up, she dug her teeth into her bottom lip. “I don’t need this to be more.”

“I do,” he said firmly before setting down his coffee cup. “You have changed things.” He pulled her into his arms. “You’ve broken down my dating defaults and forced me from the narrow love-lust binary that I allowed myself to be captive to.” Pressing a kiss to her hands, he looked up. “You make me think harder, laugh louder, and make it impossible not to lower the shield to my heart.”

“Those words are….”

“Impossible to resist?”

“A little bit.”

“Just know that I will never try to keep you, but I will try to be the place that makes you always want to stay.”

The tight hug he received in response told him it wasn’t the worst sentiment she’d ever heard.” Sliding his hands through her hair, he smiled. “I’m making plans, Lucy.”

She lifted her head and gave him a blazing smile. “The kind that includes waffles and sausage?”

“Sure, eventually breakfast food could be involved.”

“Please, be more mysterious.”

He barked out a laugh. “I was helping Desmond the other day, and he told me he’s ready to sell his house and move in with his son.”

“I had a feeling that might happen. He’s the dearest man, and once he retired from practicing law, he just sort of lost his spark.”

“We came to an agreement and shook hands.”

Lucy frowned. “What does that mean?”

“I going to make a home, in Haven, for us.”

“Us?”

“Yes.” He lifted his hand and traced her mouth. “And you don’t have to look panicked. I’m not suggesting we shack up tomorrow.”

“How encouraging.”

“I’ve been upfront with you since we met and can see us making a future together.”
