“Do tell,” Sophie said. “I’ll take notes for my current work in progress.”

“Get your mind out of the gutter,” I said. “He held doors open for me, opened the car door, held out his hand to help me out of the car. Gentlemanly stuff like that. Hell, he even walked me to the door at the end of the night. None of the guys I dated ever did that. Granny Vi and my mom commented on it more than once, especially with Brian, but I told them that kind of thing was old-fashioned and outdated.”

“But it’s not,” Anjannette said. “I’m with you, none of my exes did it, or if they did, it was short-lived. But Leo does that stuff all the time. I’m the same as you, I never thought I’d like it, but I do. It’s really sweet.”

“Good for you two ladies finding the good guys. It’s just like our books,” Eve said.

“And you both deserve the best.”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. Simon and I have had one date. So what you said really only applies to Anjannette and Leo.”

“Oh please,” Anjannette said. “For years I said that Simon had the hots for you. Now that you’re giving him a chance, the only way it’s not going to turn into something more is if you don’t want it to.”

I’d be lying if I said her words didn’t freak me out a little. Or a lot. Simon is the nicest guy I’ve ever dated and I don’t want to hurt him. What if I’m just talking myself into feeling something? What if this moves forward and I find I’mnotnot into him? Or even worse, what if I don’t know how to function in anormalrelationship?

“Stop it!” Anjannette’s words stopped my spiraling thoughts. Once she had my attention, she continued. “Stop thinking yourself out of a relationship with Simon before it has a chance to get started.”

“Says the woman who’s in the perfect relationship,” I said then hoped my tone was more snarky than sarcastic.

“And you were there every step of the way to make sure I didn’t go off the rails when Leo and I first got together. Hell, if it wasn’t for you, I probably wouldn’t have even given him a chance. So now it’s your turn to listen. You’re amazing and you deserve to be happy. Simon is wonderful and sweet and kind, and given the chance, he’ll treat you like the queen you are.”

Anjannette stood and mimicked a mic drop, then walked over to the couch and grabbed her duffle bag and purse. “And now I’m going home tomyperfect man. See you tomorrow ladies.”

I watched her leave then looked at Sophie and Eve, my brows raised.

“She’s not wrong you know,” Sophie said.

“She definitely isn’t,” Eve agreed.

If my girls all believe it, it must be true. They wouldn’t steer me wrong.

Now I just have to convince myself.

Simon

“Doyou guys need anything else while I’m in here?” I yelled.

“Napkins,” Andrew said.

Archer didn’t answer so I figured he’s good. After grabbing three bottles of Susquehanna Brewing Pumpkin Ale and a stack of napkins, I made my way back into the living room. My friends were sprawled on the couch, each holding a heaping plate of Chinese food.

I placed the beer on the coffee table and filled my own plate before settling on the recliner.

“You ready?”

“As I’ll ever be,” Archer said.

Normally we play video games on Thursday nights, but I’m not feeling that so I suggested watchingObi-Wan Kenobiinstead. Archer’s not thrilled with the change, but since Andrew is okay with it, majority rules. I reached for the remote and turned on the TV.

“Wait,” Andrew said. “Aren’t you going to tell us about your date?”

“Uh, it seemed to go well.” I shrugged. “We’re going out again Saturday, so…”

“Where’d you take her?”

This again from Andrew. When it comes to dating, he’s kind of stuck, so he’s always interested in what other people are doing. Archer could care less, both about having a love life or hearing about anyone else’s.

“The AV.”
