My phone buzzed in my pocket and I reached down to check the caller ID.
“I apologize. I need to grab this. It’s my mom.”
I stood and swiped to answer as I headed out of the restaurant.
“Hi mom, what’s up?”
“My laptop is acting up. Could you ship my old one out to me?”
“Sure,” I said. “What’s going on?”
“I don’t know. It’s really slow starting and shuts down without warning.”
My mom knows her way around computers so I didn’t take it any farther than that. I’m sure she’s done all the basic troubleshooting as well as some more advanced stuff.
“Just text me where you want it shipped and I’ll send it out next day air tomorrow.”
“I appreciate it,” she said. “So, how are things going?”
“Pretty good.”
“I’m sorry if I interrupted a date or something, but I have good cell service right now and didn’t want to chance not being able to reach you.”
Since I didn’t mention Keera to my mom, I’m guessing Shannon did. It’s not like I date so much that she’d assume that’s what I’m doing on a Saturday night.
“Why would you think I’m on a date?”
“I saw that you’re at the South Side Lanes, so I’m guessing you’re bowling, which isn’t something you normally do.”
What is it with my mom and sister suddenly stalking my location?
“Actually I’m at Poor Richard’s.”
“Oh.”
I could have left it at that, but figured I’d tell her who I’m with.
“But I am on a date with Keera.”
“Simon, you could have just said that.”
“I just did.”
“So it’s going well?”
“So far,” I said. “We’re on a double date tonight with Keera’s friend Anjannette and her fiancé, who just happens to be Leo Marakis. Tell dad.”
“He’s that adorable baseball player, right?”
“He is a baseball player. I’m not committing to the adorable part.”
“I’ll be sure to tell him, and I’ll text you an address within the hour.” she said. “I apologize for interrupting your date.”
“It’s not a problem.”
“And I look forward to meeting Keera when we’re home for the holidays.”
I hope that will happen too, but I’m just taking this one date at a time right now.
