CHAPTER10

Keera

“I can’t believeyou have to work all night,” I said.

“You know it’s easier to do updates when no one else is there.”

I’m at the studio late all week, so Simon and I have been Zooming when I get home. But tonight he’s doing some kind of system update at work, and since I won’t be home before he has to leave for the office, I’m hiding in the corner of the hallway just outside the studio to make the call.

“So you’re doing this tonight and tomorrow?”

“If all goes well.” He held up his hand with his index and middle finger crossed. “So how’s the class planning going?”

“I think we have the basics down, now we’re just tweaking it,” I said. “The good thing is that once it’s done, we won’t have to do it again for subsequent classes. For the most part anyway. I’m sure we’ll have to change little things as we go along.”

“I’m so glad you’re doing what you love now. Wilder was sucking the life out of you.”

“Getting laid off was definitely the best thing that ever happened to me, even though it didn’t seem like that at the time.” I shook my head. “But I don’t want to talk about Wilder anymore. Will you be working this weekend?”

“I shouldn’t be. What about you?”

“I’m free after three o’clock Friday. Anjannette is doing the Friday night and Saturday classes. And of course, I’m always off on Sunday.”

“Would you want to go for a hike Saturday?”

“A hike?” I scrunched my nose. “I can climb a pole, but get me out in the great outdoors and all my muscles abandon me.”

“The trail isn’t crazy, I promise. There’s a windmill park in Bear Creek I think you’ll enjoy.”

“Like those huge windmills? You get to see them up close?” Simon nodded. “That would be so cool. I’m in.”

“It’s a date then,” he said. “I’ll call you tomorrow and we’ll set up a time.”

We disconnected and I closed my laptop then stood and stretched my legs. Anjannette was just finishing up a beginner class so I stood in the doorway and watched them execute the dance she’d taught them.

Most of the ladies in this class are new to the studio, but I can already see the change in them. Pole helped me feel more comfortable and confident in my body, and I love watching the same transformation in our students. This isn’t an easy sport, but for the people who fall in love with it, the rewards are big.

I stepped into the room and clapped as they finished their dance, then walked over to the desk and set my laptop down. Anjannette joined me as the ladies wiped down their poles.

“Did you get Simon?”

“Yeah, I caught him before he left for work.” She stared at me and smirked. “What?”

“Nothing,” she said. “I just think it’s so cute how you were worried you weren’t going to get to speak to him tonight.”

“I wasn’t worried.”

“You were panicking.”

I rolled my eyes.

“If you say so.”

“I do.” Her triumphant smile was equal parts annoying and adorable. “You guys really are cute together so I’m glad you’re giving it a chance.”

“I’ve never dated someone I was friends with before. It’s different, but kind of nice.”

We paused our conversation to say goodbye to the students as they left the studio. Which is fine with me. I don’t want to dissect or obsessively discuss what’s going on with Simon. We’re taking things slow and I’m enjoying myself.
