“No, nothing is going on. I just feel like getting out of the city.”

I sat forward and rested my elbows on my knees.

“Everything okay?” I asked again.

This time, it took her a little longer to answer.

“We’ll talk when I get home. I’ll see you Thursday night.”

“See you then.”

Something has definitely been going on with Shannon the past few months, but whatever it is, she hasn’t wanted to talk about it. Maybe this weekend she will.

I picked up the remote and scrolled again, happy when I found anIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiamarathon. I’d just finished watching one episode when the doorbell rang. That reminded me that Andrew and Archer were coming over today. Between Keera’s text and Shannon’s call, I’d gotten totally distracted and forgot.

“Hey guys,” I said as I opened the door.

“You have Mountain Dew, right?” Archer asked as he walked across the threshold.

“I believe so.”

Andrew followed him carrying a tray of pizza with a container on top, which I assume holds chicken wings.

“They didn’t have any at the pizza shop and Andrew wouldn’t stop anywhere else.”

“Because I told you Simon usually has it.”

“Usuallyisn’t always.”

I followed them into the kitchen and opened the drink refrigerator, breathing a sigh of relief when I spotted four cans of Mountain Dew on the bottom shelf.

“Stop bickering children, I have some. What do you want, Andrew?”

He looked over and decided on a beer. I grabbed the drinks and set them on the island, then took a seat. They’ve spent enough time here and know where everything is kept and already set out paper plates and napkins. I grabbed one of each then took a slice.

“How was hiking yesterday?” Andrew asked then looked me over as he took a sip of beer. “It doesn’t look like anything is scraped, sprained, or broken so that’s a plus.”

“Very funny.” I took a bite of pizza and chewed. “You act like I’ve never gone hiking before.”

“I know you have because I put the cast on your wrist after one of your hiking trips a few years ago.”

“I hurt myselfone timeand I have to hear about it forever.”

“Don’t forget about that time in junior high when you ended up in the emergency room with all those bee stings,” Archer said.

“How is it my fault that I got swarmed by bees?”

“I didn’t say it was your fault. It’s just a fact.”

Shaking my head, I finished my slice and reached for some chicken wings.

“But to answer your question, our hike was nice.”

“I’ll never understand the appeal of being outdoors, especially in the woods,” Archer said. “I hope you checked yourselves for ticks.”

I’m not even gonna comment on that.

“Speaking of outdoors,” Andrew said, thankfully changing the subject. “If you guys aren’t doing anything Saturday afternoon, there are bands playing all day at Nay Aug Park.”
