“Shannon is there and he wanted to talk to her about something, so he just brought me home after axe throwing.”

Plus their rooms are right next to each other and I didn’t want to test the thickness of the walls. But Granny Vi doesn’t need to know that.

“How was axe throwing?”

“It was so much fun. You and your friends should go.”

“We’d probably hurt ourselves.”

“We all got out unscathed.” I flexed my fingers and rolled my neck. “Although my hands hurt and my shoulders are kind of sore. Which is weird, considering what I do for a living. You’d think they’d be more conditioned.”

“My friends and I will stick to the casino and going out to dinner.”

“Your loss.” I stood and walked over to the counter. “I’m gonna make some toast. Do you want any?”

“No thanks, I already ate.”

I popped two slices of bread into the toaster then leaned against the counter.

“What are you making for dinner?”

“Roast beef, mashed potatoes, and corn. Your mom is bringing brownies and stuff to make them à la mode.”

“Yummy.”

“I also got some National hard rolls. Simon eats normal, right?”

“He does.”

“Thank the good Lord. Having the last one to dinner gave me a headache.”

In the last couple years of our relationship, Brian was always following some special diet or another. Keto, Paleo, Macro counting, intermittent fasting…you name it, he did it. And I agree with Granny Vi, it gave me a headache, too. Just when I got used to one, he’d change.

I pulled my toast out of the toaster and sat back down. After spreading raspberry jelly on both slices, I picked up one and took a bite.

“What time are you starting dinner?” I asked after I finished the first slice.

“Around two.”

“After I eat this, I’m going to head back to bed for a couple hours, but I’ll be out in time to help you.”

“You feeling okay?”

“Yeah, it’s just been a long week and I think it’s finally catching up with me.”

She raised her brow.

“You’re not pregnant, are you?”

“No I’m not pregnant.” I shook my head. “In fact, I’m probably getting my period soon. I’m bloated and I’ve been tired all week.”

“I don’t miss that.”

“I could definitely live without it, but I’ll takeitover a baby.”

“Now that you’re in a relationship with a normal man, you might change your mind about that.”

“Maybe, but that’s way off.”
