Keera tookanother slice of pizza for herself and placed one on my plate, too.

“Thank you.”

I kissed her cheek, then picked up the pizza and took a bite.

We’d all taken several tries at throwing axes, some with more success than others. Aside from Leo and Anjannette, three women from the pole studio are also here, Eve, Sophie, and Phoebe, who brought her boyfriend Josh. The latter two ate quickly then went upstairs to play the digital game targets. At least that’s what they said. I haven’t heard any noise up there, so I’ll just make it a point to stay down here.

“I can’t believe this place is BYOB,” Anjannette said, then took a drink of beer.

“Yeah, I wouldn’t think alcohol and throwing an axe mix well,” Eve agreed.

“Which is why I only got a twelve pack,” Leo said.

“Maybe it’ll help me actually hit the target,” Keera said then looked at Shannon who’d hit the bullseye nine times out of ten. “What’s your secret?”

Shannon finished chewing the bite she’d just taken then swallowed.

“Well, it helps that I’ve done this before. Once you find the rhythm, it’s pretty easy.” She took a drink. “It also helps when you need to blow off a little steam. You give the throw an extra oomph that’s needed to really slam it into the wood.”

“That’s true,” Eve said. And from what I saw, she hit the target about half the time. “I also pictured my ex-husband’s face on the bullseye.” She stood. “In fact, I’m gonna go hit it a few more times. It’s better than therapy.”

“I don’t have the same rage at my ex-husband, but I’ll agree, throwing the axe is definitely therapeutic.” Sophie said. “I think I’ll join you.”

We watched them walk toward the cages, then Leo turned back to the table.

“Ouch,” he said. “Remind me never to piss you ladies off.”

“You don’t have to worry, I’m not picturing your face.” Anjannette squeezed his bicep.

“Would you show me the secret to hitting the target?” Keera asked Shannon, then she looked at me. “I won’t picture your face either. I promise.”

“Sure.” Shannon finished her beer and stood. “Let’s go.”

“I’m coming too,” Anjanette said as she scrambled out of her seat and followed them across the room.

Leo finished eating then started tossing empty paper plates and napkins into one of the empty pizza boxes. I gathered up the empty bottles and tossed them into the recycling bin. As we finished clearing the table, loud bangs sounded from the axe cages.

“I’m not sure if we want to go near them,” Leo said with a chuckle.

Whatever technique Shannon showed them helped, because each woman was hitting her target with every throw.

“This is much more fun than what I was doing before,” Keera said. “Hey, let’s all do it at the same time.”

The others agreed and each woman stepped up to the line at the back of her cage. After counting down from five, they synchronized their throws and a second later, their axes slammed into the wood.

They jumped up and down and cheered. My eyes shifted from Keera to Shannon. I know when my sister is going through the motions, and that’s what she’s doing now. We’ll have to talk before she leaves tomorrow.

CHAPTER15

Keera

“Why are you home?”Granny Vi asked as I walked into the kitchen.

“Good morning to you, too.”

I pulled a mug from the cupboard and filled it with coffee. After adding vanilla-flavored creamer, I joined her at the table.

“I figured you’d be at Simon’s.”
