“Why did you think that?”

“You know about my past relationships. My track record isn’t great.”

“But things are different with Simon.”

Her words were more a statement than a question, but I answered anyway.

“They definitely are, but all the old baggage is still there. For instance, I was a nervous wreck when my grandmother invited Simon to Sunday dinner with my family.”

“It’s pretty normal to be nervous for something like that.”

“Yeah, but what I felt went beyond what’s normal and it definitely stems from past experiences. Every time Brian and I spent any time with my family, we usually ended up fighting. Or I ended up stroking his ego for a week. Sometimes both. And Jason was the same before him. I projected that onto Simon and expected him to react the same way.”

“But it went okay?”

“It went great, but there’s no reason it wouldn’t have. Simon isn’t like Brian or Jason, or any of the other guys. Logically I know that, but I’ve spent a lot of time with idiots and none with good guys like him. I just don’t want to ruin things because of a knee-jerk reaction.”

“If he’s as good as you say, he’ll understand,” she said. “From what it sounds like, you’re in a healthy relationship for the first time. Just go with the flow and enjoy it. Trust yourself, but more importantly, trust Simon.”

Simon

Keeraand I just finished eating when Granny Vi came breezing through the front door, her arms full of packages.

“Do you need help?” I asked.

“No, I’m good.” She plopped the bags down on the counter. “I’m heading to New York tomorrow with my friends. These are some snacks.”

She reached into one bag and pulled out Snickers bars, Pringles, and M&M’s.

“Looks like it’s going to be a fun trip,” I said.

“Road trip snacks should always look like a toddler picked them.”

“Just make sure you don’t overdo it,” Keera said. “You don’t want your sugar going

bonkers again.”

“Oh psshhh. I’ll be fine.”

“You’re staying with Darren and Cole, right?”

“Yes, their new apartment has four bedrooms.” She looked at me. “Darren is my friend June’s son and Cole is his husband. They usually come here to visit, but once or twice a year, they bring her to the city and invite Irene and me along. I don’t know exactly what they do for a living, but they’re loaded.” She dragged out that last word.

“That definitely makes living in the city more enjoyable.”

“Where does Shannon live?” Keera asked.

“Upper East Side.”

For now. But I didn’t say that. Shannon hasn’t told our parents yet, and they should know before anyone else.

“I have no idea where Darren and Cole live,” Granny Vi said. “I just go wherever the limo takes me.”

“A limo?” I whistled. “Nice touch.”

“They treat us well.”

“You deserve it.”
