“So what’sthe plan for tomorrow?” Shannon asked, then shoved a handful of popcorn into her mouth.

I looked over at my sister curled up on the other end of the sectional couch. She arrived around dinnertime and instead of heading out with friends like I thought she would, we’re spending Friday night watchingDeadpool. In recent years, we’ve found some common ground with my “nerdy movies” since some of her favorite actors now star in them.

“Beyond going to the open house and talking to Keera, nothing. What more is there?”

Shifting into more of a sitting position, she crossed her legs and set the popcorn bowl in her lap.

“Simon, she’s probably going to be busy. You’ll need a plan of attack so you can get in, make your offer, and get out.”

“You make it sound like I’m going to war.”

“Not war exactly, more like playing a game.” She smirked. “You spend enough of your time doing that, so I shouldn’t have to explain the need to strategize.”

“Keera and I are friends so it’s not like I’ll be going in cold. I’m just going to ask her if she wants to go out to dinner.”

“Just be sure to make it clear you’re asking her out on a date so you don’t get friend-zoned.”

“How about I just ask her out and take it from there?”

She held up three fingers in the shape of a W, our preteen sign language forwhatever. Why is it when Shannon and I are together for more than five minutes we revert back to juvenile behavior?

We watched the movie in silence for a few scenes and I thought she was letting the whole subject drop. History should have taught me that wouldn’t be the case.

“Are you nervous?”

“No.” She looked at me, brows raised. “Shan, I’m not a tween asking a girl to the school dance.”

“I just don’t want you to get there and choke.”

“I’m not gonna choke.”

Shannon didn’t look convinced, but instead of responding, she shrugged and shifted her attention back to the movie. I did the same and groaned when I realized we’re at the sex holiday montage scene set to the song“Calendar Girl.” It’s not overly graphic, but also not something I want to watch with my sister either.

Grabbing my phone from the end table, I checked my stock portfolio then scrolled social media. Once the music changed, I knew it was safe to look at the TV again. Unfortunately, Shannon’s words kept echoing through my head and I couldn’t focus on the movie.

Instead, I mentally rehearsed what I’d say to Keera, how I’d ask her out, but it all sounded lame. Then again, nothing is as lame as a thirty-two-year-old man sitting home on a Friday night practicing how to ask a girl out.

Leaning back, I propped my feet up on the coffee table, reminding myself that there’s really nothing to be stressed about. After all, Keera is a friend. All I’m doing is asking her on a date to see if there’s potential for us to be something more.

Even though I didn’t totally believe myself, I managed to relax enough to focus on the movie.

CHAPTER3

Keera

“This turnout is crazy,”I said to Anjannette.

“Those last few women saw your social media posts but everyone else I’ve spoken to heard about this through word of mouth.” She looked around the full room. “Offering current students a discount if they bring friends was a great idea.”

“Our students are our best promo for sure.”

I glanced at the clock.

“It’s time for our first demo. You ready?”

“Are you sure you don’t want to do it?”
