of the same people so we partied together when Summer and I were home during college breaks.

It’s interesting that she’d call someone who’s only been here a couple years instead of people she’s known most of her life.

“Do you hang around with any of the old gang?”

“Um, I used to, but not in a while.” I didn’t ask for an explanation, but she offered one anyway. “Most of them are married with children and when I moved back, I was taking care of Nanny Jules.” She shrugged. “We just kind of drifted apart over the years.”

I drove the rest of the distance home, thinking about that. My friends have asked me about Summer more than once. I can’t imagine what it was like for her after she moved back.

Summer thanked me as I pulled into my driveway. She unbuckled her seatbelt before I shifted into park. Without thinking, I reached out and placed my hand on her shoulder.

“Wait.”

She froze and slowly turned her head in my direction, shifting her eyes to my hand on the way. That last thing I wanted to do was stop touching her, but I don’t want her to be uncomfortable. I rested both of my hands on the steering wheel so I won’t be tempted to reach out and touch her again.

There was so much I wanted to say, but could only think of two words.

“I’m sorry.”

Our eyes held and that sense of déjà vu returned, reminding me of another time. To when I’d been happy. When I’d been with her.

I looked toward the windshield and my hands ached as they gripped the steering wheel.

“Adam?”

I loosened my hold and shifted sideways, resting my elbow on the armrest between us.

Summer’s eyes widened when our eyes met again. If she can see half of what I’m thinking and feeling, I’m not surprised she’s shocked. I was about to offer another apology when she licked her lips and I realized she’s not shocked, she’s feeling it too.

That’s all it took for every ounce of restraint to leave my body. I couldn’t remember why I’d been avoiding her and couldn’t think of a single reason why I shouldn’t kiss her.

Moving my hand slowly, I tucked a piece of hair that had escaped her ponytail behind her ear. Cupping her jaw, I rubbed my thumb against her cheek, giving her time to back away. Not only didn’t she back away, she leaned into my touch then shifted her gaze to my mouth.

“Summer.”

I moved toward her, stopping to search her gaze, giving her one last chance to stop this. When she didn’t, I cupped her jaw and exerted a hint of pressure, tilting her head to the side.

Touching my mouth to hers, I moved slowly, taking in the feel of her soft lips against mine. The kiss was both familiar and new, and I wanted more. Needing her closer, I tipped the armrest up with my elbow, then wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her toward me.

Opening my mouth over hers, I licked the seam of her lips, asking for entry. Summer didn’t move at first, but then with a soft moan, she opened up and I touched my tongue to hers. A groan vibrated deep in my chest as I tasted her for the first time in ten years. She’s as delicious as I remember.

I forget that we’re sitting in my father’s truck in my parents’ driveway and that we shouldn’t be doing this. Instead of pulling back, I dove right in.

Our teeth touched as our mouths clashed together and I sank into the kiss, thrusting and tangling my tongue against hers repeatedly, pulling her toward me until she was pressed against my chest. Her hands shifted from my shoulders to my head and she dug her fingers into my scalp, holding on tight.

The kiss went on and on, and I enjoyed every second, every taste, every touch as our tongues teased and tasted. Kissing Summer felt like coming home and I never wanted to stop. Unfortunately, Thea chose that moment to wake up. I felt her hot breath against my face before she licked my cheek.

Reluctantly pulling my mouth from Summer’s, I chuckled and looked over at Thea.

“Someone’s awake,” I said as I wiped my cheek on my shoulder.

Summer looked a bit dazed, but then she blinked and looked at her dog, who was happily panting in the back seat. She shifted her eyes back toward me, but instead of meeting my gaze, she focused on my ear.

“She’s probably exhausted. I should get her inside.”

I thought about asking if I could go with them, but it was obvious the moment had passed. Summer opened her door and I got out of the truck to let Thea out.

“Thanks for the ride,” Summer said.
