“Anytime.”

I watched them walk across the yard. Thea looked back at me as Summer opened the door, then they disappeared inside.

CHAPTER9

Summer

I walkedthrough the front door of Eat at Turners and the smell of garlic and tomatoes set my mouth watering. It’s Italian night at the diner and I’ve been thinking about their Bolognese sauce all day.

Eve had already arrived and texted where she was sitting, so I didn’t have to awkwardly search for her as I walked through the restaurant. I went directly to the back corner, where I found my friend sitting at a table next to the window.

“Sorry I’m late.”

“No worries.” She pointed to the empty basket in the middle of the table. “The bread kept me company.

“Maybe I should leave. I’m not sure I can compete with that.”

Before she could comment, the waitress approached for our drink orders. We come here enough that we know most of the staff by name. Tonight we’re sitting at Emily’s table.

Since we’re both having Italian, Eve and I decided to share a bottle of wine. After some debate, we decided to go with a Pinot Noir from a semi-local vineyard.

Even though I know what I’m having, I picked up the menu.

“What are you thinking?” Eve asked.

“I’ve been craving Bolognese all day, but I have to admit, a couple of these specials might make me reconsider.”

“Last time I was here, I had chicken piccata and it was amazing. But I think I’m going with the chicken saltimbocca this time.”

“Those are two of the things I’m looking at. I’m also considering the broccoli rabe with chili and garlic as a side dish.”

“Why don’t we get the saltimbocca, Bolognese, and broccoli rabe and share?”

I set my menu down.

“Perfect.”

Emily returned with our wine and went through the whole wine service. While I enjoy wine, I’m not an aficionado so this whole ritual is wasted on me. Eve is the same. Still, we tasted the sample Emily poured for us and nodded. Once she filled our glasses, she asked if we were ready to order.

“We’re going to share some things,” I said, then rattled off our order.

“Great,” Emily said. “I’ll go put this in and be right back with more bread.”

“Okay, I’ve been patient.” Eve rested her arms against the table and leaned forward. “What happened Sunday night?”

I picked up my wine and took a big drink, then a small one, before setting the glass down on the table. I’ve tossed and turned for four nights now, analyzing what happened between Adam and me and I’m still confused. Eve and I talk or text every day and I’ve put off giving her details, mostly because telling her will make it more real. But I can’t take another sleepless night, and Eve is really the only person I’d discuss this with.

“We kissed.”

She nearly spit out the sip of wine she’d just taken and instead choked on it. Once she stopped coughing, she picked up a napkin and wiped her mouth.

“That’s not what I was expecting.”

“Yeah,” I snorted. “I wasn’t either.”

“So tell me how it happened.”

“I don’t even know. One minute I was getting out of the truck, and the next we were making out in his father’s truck like teenagers.”
