“I will, I promise.”

“You’re mine…” I growl quietly.

From that moment on I just hold her, stroking her naked back with my fingertips, combing my hands through her long hair, kissing her everywhere my mouth can reach.

“Death be fucking damned…” I whisper.

A challenge to fate itself.

Chapter11

Cricket

There's a knock at the door to the truck and my moan of delight catches in my throat. Jax is still rock hard inside me, pulsating, twitching, needing, no, demanding more. We both ignore the knock, but it comes again and again, more insistent each time. Reluctantly, Jax sighs and lays me down on the bed before going to the door.

“We need to get out of here,” I hear Rachel say.

In the distance the sound of sirens is getting louder and louder.

Jax grumbles something inaudible and a moment passes before he returns to me. He sits me up and slips a blood-stained t-shirt over my head.It must belong to Chase, I think as Jax slowly pulls what's left of his own pants over his still hard manhood. He reaches for me, hand steady and strong, face serious.

When I take his palm, his gentleness nearly makes me cry again. He pulls me to his chest and then swoops me up into his arms. He carries me like a princess out of the truck, his hand holding Chase’s shirt over my lady bits, and he walks me to a beat-up old truck where Rachel’s in the driver’s seat. She reaches over and opens the door and Jax deposits me inside the vehicle and buckles me in before kissing my forehead. He closes the door and turns away to help Chase in the back of the truck. Rachel and I exchange a look, hers shocked and concerned, mine dreamy and in love.

“I never knew he was anything but a brute…” Rachel says as she flips the truck around and starts back towards town. First responders are everywhere, but as we pass the police only nod and wave us on.

“He is a brute…” I whisper, looking out the back window at my man as he cradles Chase’s head in his lap. “He’s my brute.”

“That he is…” Rachel reaches over and grabs my hand, pulling my knuckles to her face and rubbing them against her cheek. “Cricket, don’t leave again…” she begs, tears spilling over my fingers. “Please?”

Her eyes, so much like mine, are in so much pain. My own tears return, and I unbuckle and scoot to the middle seat and Rachel wraps her arm around me and holds me tight.

“All my life I wanted a sister, and the thought of losing you now…” She chokes on the words, but her hand stays steady on the steering wheel.

“I’m sorry. I thought I was doing the right thing. Sparing all of you the pain of watching me die.”

“You will not die!” Rachel shouts, holding me even tighter. “I won’t let you!”

She starts chanting in Latin, holding me so tight it hurts, and my body starts to tingle. In my mind her words translate seamlessly and I shudder as the magic pours inside me.

“I call upon the power of nature,

I call the mother and all her creatures,

I summon the father and all his strength,

I will go to any length…

Fill her with strength and fire,

Grant for us her heart’s desire,

Heal her body and her soul,

So she may become whole…”

"Virtutem appello naturae;

Matrem et omnes creaturas eius voco;
