Our release comes quickly. Powerfully. Carli’s cries become a scream as her body tightens, her walls clenching around me, her nails digging into my fingers. It wrenches my own orgasm out of me, sending me over the edge. I roar, my thrusts losing all coordination as I unload everything I have. Everything I feel for this beautiful, sassy, special woman.

My mate.

Carli shudders beneath me as the peak stretches out, as if neither of us are willing to let it go. Our gazes meet, connect, and hold on as pleasure dissipates, leaving us breathing hard.

“Mine,” I whisper.

She smiles. “Mine.”

I kiss her, knowing she’s right. Each time Carli gives herself to me, I become hers for another lifetime. Our hearts fuse a little more. Our souls smile at the gift of being close.

Which is why having to leave is so fucking hard.

I collapse beside her, drawing her to me as I press a kiss to her temple. Carli snuggles in, panting. She slips her hand up my shirt to rest her palm over my thundering heart.

“How soon?” she whispers.

I draw her in closer as if I can protect her from the answer. “Tomorrow.”

I wait with my breath held. I recognize it now. The fact I can’t force her to come with me. Carli’s had so much taken from her, including her pack, her own family. I can’t take the final thing she has—control.

Which means whatever choice she makes, I need to respect.

“I’ll miss you,” she confesses, her voice small and broken.

My breath whooshes out as acceptance settles like a rock in my gut. I know what Carli really means by that. She’s scared. For the both of us. When we’re together, we undoubtedly feel stronger, more protected, our love acting as a shield around us. But when we’re apart, we’re vulnerable. I know I am when I’m not with her. I’m constantly on edge worrying. I hate the distance, but sometimes sacrifices need to be made.

She’s scared for herself, but more so for our baby. Her words from earlier, said so fiercely and tenderly, echo through my mind.

I’ll protect you with everything I am.

Which is what I’m going to do, too. I’ll eliminate anything and anyone that’s a threat to us. I’ve had enough. Once Carli gives birth, I'm not leaving her side nor am I going to let her and our child be in the line of fire.

“I’ll miss you, sweetheart,” I say after a pause.

Carli murmurs something incoherent, her face burying further into my chest, hair splayed all over my shoulder, tangling through my fingers. I don’t want her out of my grasp.

“I’ll miss this too.”

“What? The sex?” I ask, teasingly tickling her arm. She squeals, trying to peel away from me, but I keep her body firm against mine. “You’re insatiable, aren’t you?”

“For you, yes I am,” she says, honesty making her voice husky. “But you know, we could try phone sex once in a while.”

“Heck yeah, we can do that.”

Carli tips her head back, exposing her slender neck as she laughs. “Look who’s being insatiable now.”

I wink at her. “We’ll be fine. We’ve got through the hardest part, haven't we?”

“The breakup?” she asks, and I nod. I slide lower until my nose nudges her own. We breathe each other in and lock eyes.

“As long as we know we’ll come back to each other because I’m not leaving forever.”

Tears well up in her eyes. I cup her cheek with one big hand, steadying her. “Remember when you said you want our baby safe?” I whisper inside our intimate bubble, afraid that anything at any moment could pop it. “I want that too. I don’t want to stress you or the baby. From all the websites I’ve gone through, I know that’s not healthy.”

Another fun fact that I know is Devon being a cold-hearted murderer now. As long as I’m alive, I won’t let him come near her, or touch her even for a second. I lean in and kiss her lips. Carli’s pliant mouth opens up with a soft sigh. My tongue touches her, a tingle running up my spine.

“Speaking of our baby,” Carli says when she pulls away. “We need to come up with some names before you go. I’ve got a list of baby girl and boy names that I like. Why don’t you take a look and tell me which ones you prefer too? We don’t have to decide immediately, but it’s good if we have a few choices.”
