“I’d love that. Show me the list. If something like Case is on there though, I’m going to sleep,” I say with a mock serious face.

“Case?” Carli sits up, looking at me over her bare shoulder.

“Jace and Carli together,” I explain.

With an extra dramatic eye roll she slides off bed. “You’re so cheesy sometimes…but maybe Jarli is better.”

I wince, and she laughs, eyes crinkling at the corners at the face I make.

“Very—”

A loud thud cuts me off. I shoot up, tugging on my trousers in less than a second. Carli’s wide eyes dart to the door and back to me, her body trembling with fear. I’m about to go to her first, when another thud shatters the air. It sounds like someone’s trying to break the fucking door down.

“Wait here,” I tell her as sternly as I can.

With determined steps, I walk toward the door.

No one is going to frighten my mate.

Chapter13

Carli

Wait here? Does he really think I’d listen?

I’m terrified, but the anxiety of not knowing what’s happening out there is worse. I put on my clothes, grab the pocketknife I keep in my bedside drawer and quietly follow Jace down the hall. I know it isn't either Tiff or Daisy. They know how paranoid I get when someone shows up unannounced so they also make sure to at least send a text before coming. But if it’s not them…then who? No one else knows we’re here. Is it Danika?

Holding my stomach with one hand, I peek from the dividing wall and watch Jace tuck his gun in his waistband before swinging open the door. I choke strangles in my throat, my fingers flying up to cover my mouth before my gasp can be heard. I’d recognize the outline standing on the other side anywhere.

Tall, muscular, slanting down on one side as he leans his weight. Devon always does that, trying to be casually cocky. He grins wide when he sees Jace, and I know he’s pleased with himself for finding us.

Jace’s fingers immediately curl around the barrel of his gun. “Devon,” he spits out.

He’s as shocked as I am, but he’d never show it. Crossing his arms over his chest, Jace moves to one side to see past Devon at the few other people gathered behind him. There are a few familiar faces, but just as many that I don’t know.

Devon as allies.

“Who knew this many of your people were willing to come to my side, right Jace?” Devon chuckles, gesturing to them. “They were so eager to take you down. You’re a shit Alpha after all.” He tsks in disappointment.

I clench my fists, rage building inside of me. Jace is one of the best Alpha’s I’ve ever known. What’s more, Devon’s trying to bait Jace. Trying to jab his toxic words where they hurt the most. I know Jace is vulnerable now, thinking of me at the back of his mind and the safety of his child, but he somehow manages to keep his calm.

“Nothing you say holds any importance to me, Devon. Now if you all could please leave before I kill you…” Jace grips the door handle, about to swing it shut on their faces, when Devon puts a hand out to stop him.

“We’re not done. It took a lot of time and effort to find Carli. I’d like to see my mate.”

“She’s not your anything,” Jace states flatly.

“Isn’t she?” Devon cocks his head. “We were supposed to be at the mating ceremony together, and you were going to be with Beth. But you left her, and now you’re alone, apparently stealing my woman. What would people say when they find out about an Alpha going after his pack member’s girls? Are you sleeping with only her, or is there a room full of women waiting for you back home?”

I roll my eyes from the dark corner of the room where I stand. What’s the point of his lies? Because we’re not buying it. But from the way people are shifting behind Devon, I can tell they are. And why wouldn’t they believe him? After all, Devon has tricked them to come all the way here. He’s capable of deceiving his way through more. And he’s after Jace and my relationship again.

When Jace widens his stance and raises one eyebrow, I inwardly smirk. Devon’s needs to try harder to get to us.

“Why do you want to know?” Jace taunts. “You interested? I mean, I’m kind of flattered, Devon. You’re taking a lot of time and effort, your words not mine, to find Carli and break us apart again. We must always be on your mind, huh? Or are you just bored of your pathetic little life and you need some toxic drama? I really can’t tell.”

Devon growls. “I have a bigger plan. You’ll see when the time comes.”

“The time definitely isn't now, because I want to go back to bed and you’re going to leave.” Jace flicks his hand dismissively. “I know what you did to my friend, I want you gone.” Jace moves to the side, addressing the group behind Devon and says, “Did you guys help him with all that? The murdering of innocent people because he’s thirsty for power?”
