“Should I?”

“Yes.” He settled back down against the couch cushions so my head could drop back onto his shoulder. Being this close to him probably wasn't fair to him or me either, but it felt like the most natural thing in the world to have my head resting on him.

We sat there in silence for a few seconds before he spoke again. “It's a good job you're cute, Lola, because I have a lot to teach you about rock’n’roll.”

Even though his words were innocent enough, they caused something to clench deep inside of me. Butterflies took flight in my stomach. Without meaning to, I shifted my weight, moving my hips away from him so he couldn’t sense my sudden shift of thoughts.

I wanted him. Even after telling him we should just be friends. He was a brightly lit candle that little moth me was insanely drawn to.

“I'm sure there is a lot you could teach me, Dion.” The words left my mouth in a hushed whisper, but I knew he had heard them. Silently, he leant forward to pause the program. In the dim light, I could see the rise and fall of his shoulders as he contemplated what to say next.

Finally, he turned. “Anyone would think you are flirting with me, Lola.”

Not daring myself to speak, I stared straight ahead. I was flirting with him, which was all kinds of mean. I knew he wanted me in his bed, naked and moaning his name, and it had been me who had said we should keep things platonic.

I had been the one to demand we stay friends. Which felt all sorts of stupid in my current horny state. Not that there was anything stopping us being friends and fooling around? We were both adults and… Without thinking, I reached for him. My hand curled into the dark hair at the base of his skull. I pulled his mouth towards me an inch before he stopped me. Dion's dark blue eyes glinted in the light from the TV.

“What are you doing, Lola?”

“I…uh…”

“You want to kiss me?” I could tell by his voice that he already knew the answer to that. “Or do you want me to kiss you?”

“Isn't that the same thing?”

“No. It's not. If you want me to kiss you, then I will be the one who has made a move. Again. You can be blameless. The victim of the big, bad rockstar.” His eyes glittered. “But if you kiss me…” He shrugged. “Then you will have to admit to yourself and the world that you want me as much as I want you.”

Tenderly, he traced my lips with his thumb. Shockwaves flooded my body and my eyes closed as if of their own violation. I did want him. There could be no denying that. But then, didn't thousands of women want him just as much? Maybe even more than I did.

“It doesn't have to mean–.” I started to say before being silenced as his hand pressed over my mouth.

“But it does mean something.”

He was right. It did mean something. I wasn't sure what yet, but something. And it wasn't fair to either of us for me to kiss him until I knew what that was.

“I should go to bed.” Forcing myself to move away from him, I watched his hand fall to his lap. I was halfway to the door before he spoke.

“Sleep well, Lola. If you dream, dream of me.”

It was the last thing I expected him to say and for a second, I could do nothing but stare at him. If only he knew the truth about how much he invaded my dreams.

My dreams were always of him.

DION

Lola was up and in the kitchen sipping coffee when I finally emerged the next morning. It wasn't late, but somehow I had expected her to be dressed and ready for the day. The woman who stood in the kitchen with a mug of coffee in one hand and her phone in front of her face looked like she had just rolled out of bed. Her hair fell around her face in a golden fuzz that caught the early winter sunlight. It was like a halo which was apt seeing as she was a goddamn angel in my eyes.

“Did you sleep well?” I asked when she didn't lower her phone to greet me or even look at me. She was so engrossed in what she was looking at, it was like I was invisible. And I wasn't used to not being seen. Not being the centre of attention.

“Is there coffee?” Stepping into her space, I reached past her, making sure my fingers brushed against her hip. “Lola?”

Finally, she lifted her head and her eyes were awash with tears again. I groaned inwardly. The tears last night had been bad enough. I wasn't sure I could handle more waterworks today.

“Hey now.” Coffee forgotten, I let my fingers settle on her hip. “What's wrong?”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Tell you what?”
