Light magic. Did it ensure that outcome? Make you even more beautiful? Was that why I’d never arrived on a man’s arm before? Because dark magic, in contrast, made me ugly?

“The night sky is more beautiful than any sunrise, little moon.”My necklace warmed, insecurity forgotten, as the remaining House leaders entered.

Angel House arrived next, donned in impeccable white feathers for clothes that blended seamlessly into their wings. Vamp House wore vintage, lacy black clothes reminiscent of 18th-century barons and baronesses. Sirens wore as many scales as they could out of the water, with a mermaid skirt for the female leader and a trident accessory for the male who replaced Lukas.

Xavier and the female leader of Wolf House arrived next, dressed in a simple button-down and cocktail dress. They both arrived with dates, and on Xavier’s arm was the most well-dressed version of my friend I’d ever seen.

“Cordelia!” I called.

She didn’t see me, but that was okay. I’d seen her. Her pink chiffon dress made her look like a happy cupcake, and I was going to tell her that the next time I saw her. I was so glad she came.

She smiled and waved at every person she met like she was having the time of her life. When I got the chance, I’d tell her she was a natural at parties.

“We’re going to be like that one day,” Aubrey promised.

“Definitely,” I affirmed.

I longed to imitate them. To be a leader not only in this school but in life. To be so well known that an entire campus of freshmen would do anything to be just like you.

“Luna.”

A shadow tendril coiled around my ear.

A chill bolted through my spine, rooting me to the spot.

He was here.

ChapterTwenty-Six

THE ORACLE MUSINGS

The annual Fae Masquerade ball is tonight! This oracle, unfortunately, did not receive an invitation. So, I am delighted to inform you that most of the candidates who did will have a rather horrific time.

My shadows thrummed with anticipation. My palms suddenly felt sweaty, breaths coming in too fast.

“Luna?” Aubrey asked. I was immobilized.

Then she saw him, too, appearing out of thin air. He strode toward us, a tempestuous shadow mask covering his upper face. Partiers thrashed behind him, providing a sharp contrast to his calm demeanor.

His suit was black, with a simple moon embroidered on the breast pocket. His dark hair hung, untamed, around his head, like he spontaneously planned to arrive at the ball. He walked with the audacity of a man who had just practiced dark magic publicly, in a room full of witnesses, and knew they couldn’t do anything about it. He walked as if he didn’t threaten my very life and purpose with his presence.

He walked with a smile.

His eyes drank in my body, moving with an intimacy that left me feeling naked, even in a room filled with people.

He might have spent all night lusting over me if Aubrey hadn’t jumped in.

“Dance with me,” Aubrey suggested, holding out her hand to the Reaper.

My rage nearly toppled me over with intensity. How dare she—

He stopped in his tracks, staring at the hand in surprise.

“Of course,” he said, kissing her exposed hand.

The chandelier lights sputtered and cracked, glass pelting the students below.

Dark energy pulsed within me, demanding more. More violence. More destruction. More vengeance.
