“Reaper has never been as vile as you!”

“Now you defend him? After all the times you broke his little heart?”

Flames of shadows arched around me, taller than myself. I had to rein them in to see the fox again. “I was going to not break his heart for once, but you got in the way!”

“Why did you ask him to dance at the masquerade?” I thundered.

She laughed darkly. “I had to throw him off my tails. After I convinced him I was just your vain friend, I’m sure he never thought much of me at all.”

Genius. Even I could admit that, as furious as I was. But something didn’t click.

“Could he not sense your demon energy?”

“I coated myself with so much of your hair that day, I imagine he couldn’t think of anything but you.”

Braiding. She was always coming over and braiding my hair.

She flared her canines, watching me process. “Did you know?” She crept closer, tails trailing like a train behind a bride. “He asked me why we wanted to join the House system. He was quite worried about your mental state. Reaper was dancing with me, the most powerful seductress in all demon kind, and the only one he had eyes for was you.”

I sent every weapon I had at her at once. My shadows thrust them forward, but she jumped so high up, not a single one landed. When she fell, it was feet from me.

“Why were you always so desperate to join a House?” I demanded. “Was it because you wanted to look good? Outside your hobby of human sacrifice?”

She prowled forward. I moved my shadows into a circle of black flame. She sat just outside it.

“Because I wanted the same things I imagine your Reaper does.”

She punctuated each word with a step, circling me. “Adventure. Friendship. Family. Belonging. Humanity.”

Her lips curled up, exposing her teeth. ”A chance to evade my curse.”

Curse.

Curse.

You’re cursed.

“Reaper has a curse?”

“A curse to meet his starborn.” She tilted her head again. Looking through Aubrey’s puppy tilt and catty personality shattered what was left of my restraint.

“His curse involves his starborn?” Tired of betrayals, I threw my flames at her. She jumped high over my head, fur shimmering, landing gracefully back where she started. I was spent now, panting.

“What’s the curse?” I slurred out. Trees dissolved in ash around me. I reignited the flames, sending smoke flying.

“He approaches,” she said. “Until we meet again, Princess of the Dark.”

“Luna!” Reaper’s voice yelled.

The world went white.
