Something was off about him. He was usually hateful, but the tenor of his voice made him sound downright diabolical.

The terrible three’s steps echoed like a drumbeat as they climbed the stairs, in time to my racing heart.

They were five stories up.“Go take Cordelia home,”I told Gaksi.

“You need me more here.”

“Cordelia can encounter all kinds of demons on the way home. I can survive here on my own.”

And I couldn’t lose you, I thought to myself. I might die, but the family line would live on with Jason and Joseph.

“I do not leave my bonded.”

“I do not leave my friends behind! Go, Gaksi!”

I felt his disappointment, anger, and concern, but my shadows soothed when he jumped out of my head.

When the men reached the lip of the stairs, Hunter led the charge. The roof curved, propping Hunter up as the tallest leader of his gang, menace radiating from his figure.

“In a way, we’re doing you a favor.” Hunter held up a fae light, which twinkled enough to illuminate the brutal shadows of his face.

“How?” I asked.

He stepped forward. I moved backward. I had approximately five more steps before I fell ten stories and splattered on the pavement.

“You never would have matched a House here anyway, would you? Mythical beings are supposed to be pretty, and you’ve always been so…patchy. Like a quilt!”

His gang of degenerates laughed.

Embarrassment tightened my face, urging my shadows to strike. A simple wire, and I could trip them all over the edge.

But I wouldn’t. Because I was always in hiding, even when I was in the place I considered home.

In the distance, drones flew by, centering on the tower. Bored freshmen must be using toys to live stream this encounter.

Hunter charged, screaming bloody murder.

Before he could reach me, an infernal shriek screeched from the side. His steps wavered, and I seized my opportunity and struck. I flipped my blade out at his neck, and he collapsed with a bellow.

He groaned on the floor, clutching what was left of his trachea.

“Hard to make fun of someone when you can’t speak, isn’t it?” I taunted.

Brayden ran next. I struck right between his legs, and he crumpled. Served him right.

He should have suspected I’d attack the same place twice. Not that he had much going on down there, anyway.

“That’s to prevent such a dumb fool from reproducing,” I explained.

Air whooshed behind me, and I hit the ground before Zain’s blade decapitated me.

“What would it take to kill a bonded goblin? It’s not fair!” he huffed, jabbing at me. I jumped over Brayden’s writhing body, heading to the stairwell.

“You have every advantage here while the rest of us are fighting for our lives!” Zain roared.

I flew another dagger at him, and he deflected it. Cursed. He had second-year training, and it showed.

He cut again, slicing straight into my arm. I yowled, red-hot blood streaming down my arm.
