“Come out, come out, Gaksi goblin! Don’t tell me I have to kill your favorite mortal for you to die.”

“He’s not here,” I said before Zain tackled me. He threw me down on my ruined arm before slicing my other one clean, shoulder to elbow.

I screamed, white agony lighting up my chest.

My shadows throbbed.Out, out, out, they begged. They wanted to come out, to strangle, to seek revenge—

The macabre sound of bloody coughing came from my right, and Hunter dragged himself off the ground to finish me.

This was it. They were going to kill me.

Zain pressed his sword into my neck, straining as blood seeped out.

“I’ll cut her straight open,” Zain said. “Don’t tempt me, Gaksi. I will kill you, but not after I take out this pompous loser.”

The moon reached its peak above me. The kiss of metal cooled my neck and my back. My mind searched for consolation. At least I lasted a long time at this school. Cordelia made it. Gaksi made it. And once Zain eradicated me, I’d be able to tell Reaper I almost made it, too.

A torrent of wind distracted my thoughts, slamming so hard into my side that I cried out as Zain got thrown off.

His hulking body bounced twice off the roof before the cataclysm pushed him off the side.

Taking in a shaky breath, I braced myself.

My heart crashed back into reality as I heard the infernal shriek again.

Standing taller than any man, brighter than any sun, was my past nemesis.

The Bulgae.

And my dagger was still lodged in its back.

He howled, shaking the entire tower with his wrath. It vibrated and pulsed as I crawled away, inch by inch, panicking.

I only had one dagger left, but I was too weak to throw it.

Hunter chuffed, spurting blood ahead of me, and barreled toward it.

The hound stepped forward, hackles raised. The hairs on my neck shot up, dread consuming my soul.

“No!” I whispered, frozen solid in fright.

The hound opened its maw, sparks flying, fire combusting in a tornado of heat.

Warmth blasted.

Hunter screamed.

When I reopened my eyes, Hunter was gone. Instead, the odorous smell of roasted barbeque lingered, wafting from the smoking metal where Hunter once stood.

“Stars,” I murmured.

I breathed through my nose, urging myself to think. I was in no condition to fight, but this creature obviously was.

“You ugly beast,” Zain hissed. He unsheathed his blade, dragging himself along the floor.

Light blinded me.

“Demons are notoriously vain,” a familiar voice advised in my head.
