I shook my head. “I wasn’t sure what you were going to want.”

She nodded and grabbed the menu as if she didn’t know everything in it. The menu at the diner hadn’t changed in the past twenty years, and everyone always knew what they wanted.

Missy was going to get either the waffles with cherry topping, two scrambled eggs with wheat toast and maple sausage, or the French dip burger.

I should have just ordered all three for her and eaten whatever she didn’t want.

“I think I’m going to get the cherry waffles and the French dip burger,” she muttered.

See, I knew her.

“Or maybe the jalapeño grilled cheese with onions rings,” she thought out loud. “Though the meatloaf sounds good, too.”

Those did sound good, too, but I had never seen Missy order something from the norm before. “Uh, why don’t you get the cherry waffles and French dip burger, and I’ll do the meatloaf with a side of onion rings?” I suggested.

She peered at me over the top of her menu. “You’re sure? You normally get the cheeseburger with fries.”

I shrugged and grabbed the menu from her. “I’m open to trying something new.” I raised the menu in the air, and Leanne headed over.

“What can I get you two?” she asked.

Missy ordered two of her usuals, and I got something new, but I knew it was going to be good. The diner had good food no matter what you ordered.

Leanne grabbed our menus and headed over to the window to place our order.

Missy tapped her fingers on the table and looked around the restaurant. “I haven’t been in here for a bit. Kind of crazy how things don’t change around here.”

“Life in a small town,” I sighed.

I didn’t want to sit here and make small talk.

I wanted to have the big talk and get Missy back. Get the light back in her eyes, and just get her back in my arms.

“Missy.”

“Charlie,” she replied. Her eyes connected with mine, and something inside me broke. I had been the cause to make her lose her light, and I was going to do the one thing I knew would get her back.

“I love you.”

Her eyes stayed on me, and I’m pretty sure she stopped breathing.

“I made a mistake when I told you we needed to break up. I was stressed out with Chicken King and didn’t think I could give you the attention you deserved.”

“Attention I deserve?” she scoffed. “You make it sound like I’m some princess that needs all the attention on her. I’m not so selfish that I couldn’t see the restaurant was stressing you, Charlie. Instead of giving me the chance to show you that I could help you, you tossed in the white flag.”

“You’re not spoiled or selfish, Missy. You’re the complete opposite of that.”

She threw her hands up. “Then what the hell, Charlie?”

“Let’s just skip right through the chase,” I suggested. I didn’t want to sit here and go tit for tat on things that didn’t matter. I had fucked up, and I wanted her back.

She wagged her finger in the air. “No, no. You are not going to charm me with your malaphors. Why didn’t you give me the chance to be there for you?”

“I’m not good enough for you, Missy,” I blurted. “Everyone knows it. You’re this beautiful, bright, funny woman who deserves life given to you on a platter. Not some guy whose life is fried chicken and biscuits.”

“Did I ever make you feel like owning a successful restaurant is a bad thing? I mean, hell, Charlie. You own my favorite restaurant in the whole world, and on top of that, you’re an amazing guy! How awful of you,” she sneered.

“I’m never going to leave Adams, Missy.” I pointed at the table. “This is going to be my life. Date nights at the diner and early to bed because I need to be up early to accept the chicken deliveries.”
