Damn, damn, damn. She had to pull the best friend card. Shelby had been in my life longer than she had been out of it, and she was putting the guilt trip on me. You get me for ten minutes.

Fifteen. She countered.

Ten. I wasn’t going to budge on this. I didn’t want to come, but I would go. I’ll be there in half an hour. I was going to need that much time to dry off Bandit and get him in the car. He was still at the shore, but his front paws were touching the water.

I’ll get you some chicken and a biscuit.

4. I countered. It had been a long time since I had a biscuit from Chicken Biscuit, and if I was going to go there with a very good chance of seeing Charlie, you can bet your ass I was going to get my biscuit fix.

Girl. 4?

You better make it an even 6. I could always freeze the ones I couldn’t eat. I was not about having to go to Chicken Biscuit again after today.

Deal.

Dammit. Shelby always got me even when I seriously did not want to do something.

“Bandit,” I called.

He now had all four paws in the water, and he looked back at me. “Get your butt out of that water, boy. Come dry off, and then we’ll head over to get you a biscuit.”

Bandit leaped out of the water toward me and shook his body, throwing water all over.

“Boy!” I screeched. I shook my arms out and sighed heavily. “Next time, do that when you’re not so close to me.” I wasn’t wanting to see Charlie, but if I did, I didn’t want to be wet and smell like a dog.

I managed to corral Bandit into the car with minimum protest, and we headed in the direction of Chicken Biscuit.

Just a few months ago, if you would have told me I would dread going to Chicken Biscuit, I would have called you crazy.

Now I didn’t even want to drive by the restaurant for fear that I would see Charlie.

I didn’t realize it before he broke up with me, but now I knew without a doubt that I had been in love with Charlie.

Obviously, the same did not go for him since he broke up with me.

Part of me wanted to run to him and tell him I was pregnant and loved him, but the other part, and clearly the more dominant side of me, wasn’t going to tell him anything ever again.

“We get our biscuits, say hi to Shelby and Wilder, and then we are out of there,” I called to Bandit.

He moved in between the front seats and placed his paws on the center console. He laid his head on my shoulder and leaned into me.

“Oh, handsome,” I cooed. Leave it to Bandit to be the sweet puppy when I needed him to be. He should have been a service dog for someone who needed him, but he was mine. He could tell when I was happy, sad, and everything in between.

Bandit missed Charlie as much as I did.

I had always said that Charlie and I were just casual, but once he was gone, I knew it had been way more than just casual.

But I was too stubborn and bullheaded to tell him I loved him and didn’t want to break up.

Which meant I was now pregnant and on my own.

We came up on Chicken Biscuit, and I was shocked to see all of the cars parked along the road and the packed parking lot.

“Holy crap,” I gasped.

I knew that Wilder and Charlie had been working hard to reopen and give Chicken Biscuit a leg up over Chicken King, but I had no clue that today would be this crazy.

“How many bounce houses did he rent?” I asked Bandit.
