“That’s great, but why do you seem a little annoyed by that?”

“Ugh, sometimes your perceptiveness is so annoying, Spence.”

“Right back at ya with that evasiveness you’re trying to throw out there, Chayse.”

“Fine, so do you remember the little girl I told you about at dinner the other day that I treated at the hospital and her overprotective Dad, well he’s the other contractor. That little shit, Landon, gave me a business card fully knowing who they were.”

“Okay, so you have to deal with a guy that was a bit of an ass hat. That’s nothing new for you. You’ve been dealing with guys who think they know cars better than you and assholes at the hospital for as long as you’ve worked there. What’s so different about this guy?”

“Oh my god, Spencer. She likes him!”

“Shut up brat! I don’t like him, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say he was smoking hot. He’s at least 6’2” built, but not bulky, and he’s got fucking dimples. Dimples! You know how much I love dimples and also someone who is competent with power tools, which he totally is.”

“Okay, and that’s bad because…?” Emerson questions with a raised eyebrow and a little grin on her face.

“You both know I’m not looking for a relationship. I’m already not doing well balancing my priorities. Plus, I want to focus on my career. I’m still learning how to balance everything at work and prove that I am the right person for the job. If I continue to do a good job, it will open up so many more opportunities for me in the future.

There’s also the issue that he has a child, who I already know is pretty fucking awesome. I love kids and it would be no time until I was head over heels in love with her. I’m already struggling maintaining my current relationships, I’d end up letting her down and breaking her heart. I can’t have that on my conscience.”

“Okay, calm down Chayse. Those are all valid points, but who’s to say it would even get that far. Do you know what he’s looking for? Maybe he doesn’t want a relationship, either.”

“Yeah, I know it seems like I’m jumping the gun a little, Spence, but I also know the chemistry we have is addicting already. I don’t think I could walk away from him if we started something. And I could never forgive myself if it ended badly and Penny got hurt in the process. I think it’s best that I just focus on my career and getting the house fixed before I try adding anything else to my plate.”

“That’s totally fine, Chayse. It actually sounds really smart and self-aware of you.”

“It sure does, but I wanna know how you’re going to resist him if he’s hot and sweaty working with power tools in your house all day?”

“Of course, that’s what you want to know ya little shit!” I swat at Emerson as she dives away. We’re almost to the waterfalls and I can’t wait. It’s a hot, sticky day today and the water is going to feel great.

“But, to answer your questions, avoidance is working wonderfully for me right now. Reid sent me their schedule, and I sent him mine, so that we both know when each other are coming and going since my work schedule is so crazy.”

“So is Reid the hot dad or the partner?”

“Reid’s the partner. Thankfully I do not have Cash’s information, or I’d probably be tempted to reach out to him.”

“So, what, you’re just avoiding your house on your hours off if he’s there? I’ve never known you to back down from any situation.”

“Yeah, Spencer. I know it’s not like me, but he really shakes me up. I swear my body can sense when he’s in the house before I even hear or see him.”

“Damn Sis, that’s hot! What if he’s your soulmate and you two are meant to live your happily ever after?”

“Alright, kid. We all know you are willing and ready to find your prince charming, but that isn’t my priority. Hey!”

Emerson splashes me in the face, and I’m left sputtering.

“I’ve told you before to quit calling me kid! Yes, I may be your baby sister, but I am not a kid anymore!”

“Nope, you’re not, but you’re still smaller than me! You should’ve thought of that before you splashed me!”

Before she can even reply, I run straight for her and scoop her up and run towards the water. She’s screaming and slapping at my back, but I won’t lose my grip on her. I run straight to the water and dunk both of us.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe you just did that!”

“Well, it’s my big sisterly duty to put you in your place every now and then.”

“Fine, whatever you say. But it’s my little sisterly duty to remind you that you are totally fucked and will be naked with the hot contractor before the end of summer.”

I can’t even argue with her, because I’ve been worried about the same damn thing since Cash walked in on me in nothing but a towel.
