“I think I get it. He’s acting as if he were a real boyfriend even when nobody is around, right?”

“Yes, that’s it. He’s more attentive than Brant ever was and I’m starting to crave those messages and little pieces he’s been giving me. It feels really fucking real and I’m having a hard time remembering that it isn’t.”

“Would it be so bad if it were real?” Leave it to Em to ask the tough questions.

“No, but we don’t want the same things. I want a husband, and babies. He doesn’t want to settle down and doesn’t plan on a forever with someone.”

“Hmm, I get that, but people change. I’m the prime example. I was so focused on my career that a relationship was not even on my radar. But then I met Cash and Penny, and my world shifted in the best possible way.”

“Yes, that’s true and I know people can change, I just don’t know if that’s what’s going on with him or if I’m reading too far into it. One of our rules is if our feelings change at all, we are supposed to tell the other person. But I’m fucking terrified to find out he doesn’t feel the same.”

“I get that, but I don’t think he would be putting so much effort in if he didn’t feel something more for you. I think you should go for it and tell him your feelings are changing.”

“I agree with, Em. There’s no need to put in the effort outside of public appearances unless he wants to, and he obviously does.”

“You’re right. We’re going on a hike tomorrow. I think I’ll talk to him about it then.”

“Good. Now, enough of this emotional bullshit. Let’s swim and have some fun!”

Chayse laughs as she catches us both off guard and scoops Emerson up and tosses her into the water. She comes up sputtering and all hell breaks loose. The rest of the day is spent having a blast and catching up with my sisters. By the time we get back into town and I check my phone, I have a message from Maverick.

Maverick:Can’t wait to see you tomorrow, beautiful. Pick you up at 10? I’ll have food and Olive has Patrick, so no rush to get back. Just you and me and the great outdoors for the whole day.

Spencer:Sounds perfect. See you then.

I let out a shaky breath and try to calm myself down while I impatiently wait to see my sexy chef and have him all to myself tomorrow. It’s going to be a long night.

Chapter Twelve

Maverick

Idon’tknowifI slept more than an hour at a time last night. It’s only been a handful of days since I saw Spencer, but I can’t fucking wait. I know nothing sexual will happen because Spencer made her rules and I respect her too much to cross them, but that doesn’t mean I haven't taken care of myself with memories from our first night together and I can guarantee I’ll be hard enough to pound nails all day today.

But if Spencer is willing to renegotiate our rules, I can’t be held accountable for my actions. I’ve never been more attracted to a woman before in my life, Bianca included. Everything about her just does it for me.

I’ve been trying to reign in my emotions all week, but they keep trying to break down all of the walls I’ve built since Bianca and Nick shattered my world. I still don’t want the white picket fence and two point five kids, but I do want as much of Spencer’s time and attention I can get. Does that make me an asshole? Probably, but I can’t stay away from her.

I’m just finishing packing our lunch for the day when I hear the back door open. Judging by the fact that it didn’t slam back shut, I know it’s Olive instead of Patrick and keep working on getting everything ready instead of stopping like I would if it were Pat so I could give him my undivided attention.

“Damn Mav, something smells really good. What are you packing away for your hike with Spencer?”

“I made that chicken, pasta salad that you and Pat love. I figured it would keep well while we hiked. I also made fresh bread which is probably what you’re smelling. I got some killer cheese from one of the farmers I’ve been checking out for the bar. Figured it would go well with the bread.”

“Mmmm. Please tell me you saved me some. I know this is for your date, but I haven’t had a chance to go to the store which is definitely why I came over to snoop in your kitchen.”

Olive gives me a shit eating grin from the other side of the island before heading over to my fridge to see what she can steal. The little brat already knows there will be containers with meals in it ready for her and Pat, so she doesn’t have to worry about it. It’s one thing I can take off her shoulders and is obviously not a hardship for me. I love feeding and taking care of them which is why her fridge is ALWAYS empty.

“You know there are several meals in there for you and that I can’t deny feeding Pat one of his favorites. He’d never forgive me.”

“You definitely have that boy trained so that food is the fastest way to his heart.”

We both laugh because she isn’t wrong. Patrick will try anything once and thankfully very rarely doesn’t like something. Not that I wouldn’t make him the standard kid fair, but it’s nice being able to cook what will make me happy and know that he will enjoy it and be fed well at the same time.

“So, how are things going with Spencer? I’m assuming great since I haven’t seen you smile this much in years. And I mean even way before Bianca started being a twat.”

“Spencer is probably one of the coolest chicks I’ve ever met. She’s genuine, selfless, a bit of a wallflower, but she’s coming out of her shell more and more and it’s fucking fascinating as hell. She’s amazing with her students and fierce as fuck, but she doesn’t show that side as much.”

I realize I’m rambling and grinning like a fool, so I quickly shut the fuck up and turn away from my sister to fill up an extra water bottle. I already have two and absolutely don’t need this one, but I can’t look at my sister right now without having to come clean with how I really feel. I don’t even know how I really feel since I’ve been trying to lie to myself all week, so there’s no way I can tell Olive honestly.
