“So, are we going to talk about the elephant in the room or what?” Chayse shoves in between the front seats to look at us both and I act as if I haven’t heard her. I don’t feel like yelling over the wind, plus I want to bide a little more time before confessing all of my feelings about Maverick.

“Oh, chill the hell out, Chayse. We’ll be to the trails soon enough and then we don’t have to fight over the wind and music. Besides, do you really want to miss out on the drive there on this perfect day when we could be singing to some of our favorite songs as the wind whips through our hair.” Thankfully, Chayse shrugs and sits back in her seat.

The next song to come on isJordan Davis’-What my world spins aroundand I can’t help but think of Maverick as I sing along to one of my favorite songs. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face if I tried, but right now, I don’t want to as the words wrap around me and paint pictures of my future with the sexiest tattooed man I’ve ever met. This day is exactly what I needed to get my head on straight and be prepared for my date tomorrow with Maverick.

True to Emerson’s style, she flies up the back road that leads to the trail head before whipping the jeep in with a loud whoop! We’re all laughing as the sun warms our skin and we grab our stuff and spill out of the jeep. I take a deep breath and slowly let it out while I try to prepare for the onslaught from my sisters.

We barely make it five minutes before Chayse starts glancing over her shoulder at me. Honestly, I’m surprised she’s lasted this long. She’s never been one to hold her tongue.

“Alright, I can’t fucking take it anymore. Spill it Spence. Other than the vague text that your relationship with Maverick is fake, you’ve been tight lipped about everything. But, from what I’ve heard and that hot as fuck picture Sera sent us, there seems to be more going on.”

“Oh yeah. And don’t forget that she was the one to call the meeting of the sisters.” Emerson so helpfully chimes in. I blow out a breath and try to collect my thoughts to explain where my head is at with everything.

“Okay, so I never told you guys, but that night you took me out to distract me from the Brant situation, I ended up going home with Maverick and having the best sex of my life.”

“What the fuck?”

“Seriously!?” Both of my sisters have stopped in their tracks and whipped around to face me. Emerson is shocked, but Chayse is standing there with her arms crossed looking ready to fight she’s so visibly mad.

“Yes, and I know I never told you, but it was just supposed to be something for me. It was only one night and then I was moving on. If anything, you should be proud of me, Chayse, for asking for exactly what I wanted and then going after it.”

“I am proud of you, but it still pisses me off that you didn’t tell us. I know you don’t have to tell us everything, but sleeping with someone new after seven years and having the best sex of your life seems like something that should be shouted from the rooftops.”

“Well, maybe if she were you, Chayse, but that’s never really been Spencer’s style. So, best sex of your life huh?” Emerson is wiggling her eyebrows up and down which instantly breaks the tension as we all start cracking up.

“This is the only time I’m going to talk about this with you, but yes. It was fucking amazing.”

“Daaayum. It must’ve been hot as fuck if it has Spencer swearing!” Chayse is such an ass, but she’s not really wrong. I’m around impressionable ears all day, so I very rarely swear. It’s not a good look for a kindergarten teacher.

“So, how did one hot night of sex lead to fake dating?” Emerson asks as she turns to start heading back up the trail.

“Well, remember how dad and I told you about running into Brant at the store? Maverick was also there and asked me out again, but I turned him down since we are both looking for different things.”

“It wasn’t until he showed up at orientation with Pat that he proposed a fake dating arrangement. Apparently, Aileen, my vice principal, was one of his flings that turned bad. She tried to change the terms of their arrangement and didn’t take it well when he didn’t play along. So, when he showed up at orientation, she said some pretty nasty things and questioned his ability to care for Patrick.”

“What a fucking cunt.”

“Chayse!” My sister can be so crass sometimes.

“What? I’ve never liked her from what you’ve told me and from running into her out around the town. She thinks she’s hot shit and the very definition of a mean girl.”

“Well, I can’t really argue with you on that point. But anyway, Mav alluded that he was dating someone at the school but didn’t drop names. After everyone cleared out for orientation, I didn’t realize Maverick stayed behind. He picked up on my edginess about the Brant situation and proposed a fake dating arrangement. Dating me would prove he’s in a stable relationship with a responsible, well respected community member. And for me, it would show my coworkers that I’ve moved on, and hopefully they’ll all quit acting like they need to make sure I don’t break if the wrong thing is said.”

“And then, you walked into the room and probably prevented me from making a dumb decision, so as annoyed with you at the time that I was, I am also grateful you interrupted us, Chayse.”

“I knew something was up when I walked in. I could feel the heat pouring off of you, but then you gave me the don’t fuck with me look so I backed down. I’ve been dying to know what I walked in on.”

“Okay, so if this is all fake. Why call a meeting of the minds? Also, how do you manage the fake part? Do you have rules or something?”

“Yes, we have rules. And he’s followed them to the T, but it’s everything else that he’s doing that is messing with me.”

We’ve finally made it to the falls, and I couldn’t be more relieved. The sound of the water is helping me relax and I decide heading straight in is what I need. Apparently, Chayse and Emerson feel the same as they also strip out of their clothes to follow me in.

“Okay, so what is he doing?”

“Well, you saw the spread he made for our first date right?” They both nod their heads, so I keep going. “He’s either shown up with food or sent something sweet to school every day this week for me. He has texted me every night since he’s been working, and we actually face timed the other night while he was on Pat duty. He’s sweet, and thoughtful and has honestly been spoiling the hell out of me.”

“Um, that sounds incredible, and I don’t really understand the issue?” Emerson says as she looks at me in confusion.
